It’s safe to say that Thomas Frank’s reign at Tottenham certainly hasn’t gone to plan.

After being appointed in the summer, Frank’s pedigree with Brentford left fans optimistic that they could enjoy a successful season under his stewardship.

However, Frank is under serious pressure as Spurs sit 14th in the Premier League table.

They have also been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions already, and the majority of supporters are demanding that he be sacked.

Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday hasn’t papered over the cracks, and Jamie Carragher believes that Frank hasn’t risen to the expectations of managing in N17.

Jamie Carragher questions Thomas Frank’s mentality

It all started relatively well for the 52-year-old head coach, although Tottenham’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea on 1 November signalled several red flags, and matters have only got worse ever since.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate podcast on Friday, Carragher expressed his sympathy towards Frank and highlighted one of his biggest mistakes so far.

He said: “I actually feel a bit uncomfortable watching him in press conferences. He’s obviously finding it tough, and it doesn’t feel like a perfect fit.

“I noticed a big issue in the loss against Chelsea.

“The big thing about managing Brentford is that no matter what the result is, they always do a lap of honour at the end of every game. I then saw Frank do this after the Chelsea match and just thought that he had to get down the tunnel.

“I think he’s been shocked by how much scrutiny he’s getting from fans and the press. He almost needs a break.”

It’s undeniable that the Dane was incredibly successful at Brentford, turning them into an impressive top-flight side that was never in danger of relegation.

However, he hasn’t covered himself in glory at Spurs, and the loss to Chelsea was a huge turning point in the season.

That match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was an incredibly painful watch, and it began a wave of distrust in Frank’s ability to lead the team forward.

Tottenham loss to Chelsea was the moment fans turned on Frank

Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence appeared to ignore Frank after the full-time whistle, sparking speculation over the manager’s authority.

With the game over, Frank offered a high-five to them on the pitch; however, both players ignored their manager and headed straight to the tunnel.

Boos also rang out at the end of the match, and it was clear that the abject performance in such a big game had struck a nerve with the fans.

Tottenham now face a trip to Burnley on Saturday, and a loss against the relegation-threatened hosts would surely lead to his sacking.

When managers have done well at clubs with much lower expectations, they are immediately touted as the next big thing.

But, as Frank has proven, nothing can prepare a head coach for the immediate demand to win on a consistent basis at a much bigger club.

If he is sacked in the next few weeks, that Chelsea defeat will undoubtedly be seen as the beginning of the end of his reign in N17.
