Jermaine Beckford shares transfer story he saw about Everton player who annoyed Agbonlahor

Everton are having an impressive season under David Moyes.

The Toffees could move up to seventh in the Premier League if they beat Leeds at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday.

Moyes is doing a brilliant job with limited resources, and they’re in with a real chance of securing European football for next season.

However, Everton have been incredibly inactive in the transfer window, and they’re still yet to sign anyone.

Everton have had several players excel for them this season, but Jermaine Beckford and Gabby Agbonlahor believe one man deserves special recognition.

Jermaine Beckford backs James Garner’s decision to sign new Everton contract

Garner signed a new contract with the Toffees, which ties him down until 2030.

Garner has been fantastic in midfield for Everton this season, with his latest performance against Aston Villa on 18 January earning several plaudits.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 26 January, former Villa striker Agbonlahor and ex-Everton forward Beckford spoke about his impressive run of form.

Agbonlahor said: “Do you know who’s been impressive and has a chance of getting in the England squad? Garner.

“He annoyed me last week cause he was so good at putting tackles in.”

Beckford quickly shared what he had read about him, adding: “I had a conversation with him after the Sunderland game, and he was devastated that he missed his penalty in the shootout.

“But the head on this boy’s shoulders, he’s so wise beyond his years, and he understands what it means to be an Evertonian.

“There were links of him going back to Man United, but I believe he’s made the right call by signing a contract.”

Although the 24-year-old did miss a spot-kick in the FA Cup third-round defeat to Sunderland on 10 January, it has been a blip in an otherwise faultless campaign.

Garner is in contention for an England call-up, and it would be nothing less than he deserves at this point in his career, a major World Cup.

Garner’s return to Man United was never truly in the cards

According to Sofascore, Garner has made 64 tackles this season, which is the sixth-highest of any player in the league.

He has been indispensable for Moyes’ side, and there were some alarm bells that he would be leaving in L4 at the end of the campaign.

With his contract expiring in the summer, Garner was linked with a move to Man United.

The English midfielder has strong links to the Red Devils after coming through their academy ranks, before moving to Everton in the summer of 2022 for around £9million.

However, Moyes was never going to let his star man go on a free transfer at the end of the season, and Michael Carrick’s side will now have to pay a large fee if they wish to sign him at any point in the future.

Everton fans will be incredibly grateful that that is the case.
