Josh Acheampong’s stats prove why he could be the perfect Tino Livramento replacement for Newcastle

Josh Acheampong could be the ideal right-back signing for Newcastle United this summer if Tino Livramento moves on amid links to Manchester City.

The Chelsea defender is on Newcastle’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window, according to journalist Ekrem Konur, via X.

He was close to leaving Stamford Bridge on loan ahead of this season, but Levi Colwill’s ACL injury meant then-boss Enzo Maresca kept the 19-year-old around for the campaign.

Acheampong can play at both centre-back and right-back, but has been limited to making just 12 Premier League appearances so far this term, with 25 games played across all competitions.

He may look to leave this summer for more game time, with Newcastle’s transfer plans possibly focusing on a new right-back if Livramento does depart for pastures new.

Why Josh Acheampong could be the ideal new right-back for Newcastle

Acheampong only turns 20 in May, so has plenty of time to grow into an even better player than he is now, especially if he is given more minutes at the top level.

His versatility should appeal to any interested clubs like the Magpies too, as he is equally adept at centre-back in a back two or three, as well as at right-back or left-back.

Acheampong vs Livramento H2H stats for 2025-26 PL games

As seen above, the teenager has outshone Livramento in most of their key defensive statistics this season, so could well be regarded as a better option if Eddie Howe wants to shore up his backline for 2026-27.

That would probably be advised, since no club in the top five European leagues have conceded more than Newcastle across all competitions in 2026, with 45 goals against in 23 games so far.

Not only that, but Acheampong has even displayed his scoring prowess for Chelsea this season, with two goals in 25 appearances, while Livramento has scored just once in 104 appearances for the Magpies since joining from Southampton.

Livramento has been a clear success at St James’ Park though, alongside Lewis Hall on the left flank, and both players came through Chelsea’s academy before making their way to Newcastle.

Signing Acheampong should, therefore, also be considered purely for the fact that previous Cobham graduates have shone on Tyneside, and they could repeat the same trick with the 19-year-old.

Where could Livramento end up if he leaves Newcastle?

Livramento’s season has been blighted by recurring injury issues that have restricted him to 12 Premier League starts so far.

He was a standout for the Magpies last season, with 45 appearances across all competitions as he helped them to Carabao Cup success, while he also played five games in England under-21s’ European Championships triumph.

Sources have exclusively told Football Insider that Livramento is set to join Man City this summer after they were heavily linked to his services last year.

Arsenal are also believed to be considering a bid for the 23-year-old as it stands, so he could well have his pick of either top club in the coming months, and does look set to leave St James’ Park.
