Jurgen Klopp appointment odds shift drastically at Tottenham after confirmed sack news
Jurgen Klopp continues to be linked with a return to management, despite previously making clear he is not looking for a new position.
German coach Klopp enjoyed huge success at Liverpool and also worked wonders at Borussia Dortmund before that.
Klopp has been touted as an option for Tottenham as current boss Thomas Frank is under huge sack pressure at Spurs.
Frank will be given the West Ham game to save his Tottenham job, but it is difficult to see just how much longer the Dane will be in charge.
But it does not look like Klopp will be the next man in charge at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, even if there was any chance before.
Jurgen Klopp now frontrunner for Real Madrid job
Klopp currently works as Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull, which basically means he oversees matters at the energy drink giant’s stable of clubs.
It was recently suggested that Klopp is unhappy at Red Bull, potentially allowing Tottenham and others a chance to pounce.
However, a major bookmaker has dropped Klopp’s appointment odds at Tottenham from 6/1 to 12/1 in the space of a day.
This can be explained by Klopp emerging as a frontrunner to replace Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid. The Spaniard’s exit was announced in a surprise statement on Monday.
Klopp is now level with Roberto De Zerbi, while Ruben Amorim (10/1) and Enzo Maresca (8/1), who recently left Manchester United and Chelsea respectively, are also on the list.
Ironically, Xabi Alonso is the new favourite to manage Tottenham next now that he is out of work, with that an appointment many Spurs fans would welcome.
Oliver Glasner (4/1) and Marco Silva (5/1) of Crystal Palace and Fulham respectively, are second and third favourites for the job if Frank goes.
What has Klopp said about returning to management?
Klopp was asked specifically this week about the chance to return to a top managerial job – arguably the biggest in the world – with Real Madrid.
“This has nothing to do with me and does not affect me at all,” Klopp told Austrian broadcaster Servus TV.
“Coaching jobs are always changing, and it’s fine to observe that from the sidelines without worrying about what it might mean for you personally, because where I am now is the right place for me.”
Manager Club Odds Xabi Alonso N/A 4/1 Oliver Glasner Crystal Palace 5/1 Marco Silva Fulham 6/1 Enzo Maresca N/A 8/1 Ruben Amorim N/A 10/1 Roberto De Zerbi Marseille 12/1 Jurgen Klopp N/A 12/1
On the basis of those quotes, it does sound as though Klopp is true to his word in that he does not want to return anytime soon.
Klopp has also said Liverpool are the only English team he will manage in his career, which obviously rules Tottenham out of the running.
In an ironic twist, though, it may well be that the man Klopp is favourite to replace in Alonso is actually the best option for Spurs.
