Kris Boyd says Rangers can't let current star leave, wage drop likely in any new contract
James Tavernier continues to provide memorable moments for Rangers fans.
Rangers beat Dundee 3-0 at Ibrox on Sunday to move just four points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts.
Tavernier’s spot-kick opened the scoring, and he reached the milestone of 100 league goals for Rangers with his sweet strike into the top corner.
Danny Rohl is doing a fantastic job, and he has relied on the 34-year-old to help lead the team on their brilliant run of form.
Kris Boyd has been impressed with Tavernier this season, and he spoke about what the future holds for him in Govan.
Kris Boyd urges Rangers to offer James Tavernier a new contract with a lower salary
Tavernier’s contract expires on 31 May 2026, and the right-back’s 11-year spell at Rangers could be over.
He was part of the 2021 title-winning side under Steven Gerrard, while also playing a starring role under Giovanni van Bronckhorst as the Bears reached the Europa League final in 2022.
Most fans want him to stay in G51, although the 34-year-old hasn’t spoken out about his immediate plans for the future.

Speaking on the Go Ballistic podcast on 26 January, Boyd believes that Tavernier should be offered a new deal, but he’ll have to take a pay cut.
He said: “I’d give him a new deal. Rangers can’t keep letting the likes of Stevie Davis, Alan McGregor, Scott Arfield, and Ryan Jack leave. They need Tavernier’s experience.
“I don’t think Tavernier will be Rangers’ number one right-back going forward if he extends his deal. I mean, that’s obvious, but has he got a part to play? Yeah, I think he has.
“Listen, he’s probably on a good wage; he’s the Rangers captain. If he’s going to stay, he might have to come down in terms of wages.”
Rangers had been criticised for a lack of professionalism this season, and it seems shocking that Russell Martin wanted Tavernier to leave during the summer transfer window.
Tavernier may have to captain the side from the bench at times in the future, but it’s clear that his presence in the squad is crucial.
Tavernier’s end product is irreplaceable
The fact that Tavernier is Rangers’ top scorer yet again after 23 Scottish Premiership matches is extraordinary, and it’s a testament to how effective he is in the final third.
With six league wins in a row, Rangers are full of confidence, and Tavernier is looking to captain the team to a first Scottish Premiership win since 2020-21.
Having joined the Bears in July 2015 from Bristol City, it would be emotional if he were to leave in the summer.

Not only is he a great leader behind the scenes, but the sheer number of goals that he has been involved in is unique for a defender.
The Bears desperately need an older figure in the dressing room, and Tavernier’s experience can’t be replaced very easily.
Ibrox will be mourning the day he finally plays his last game, and Rohl certainly won’t be taking his presence in the team for granted as the season progresses.
Hopefully, he signs a new contract, and supporters can continue to witness his magic at Ibrox.
