Liverpool’s wage bill is now the highest in the Premier League which has only added to the pressure on manager Arne Slot.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, on Liverpool‘s latest financial figures.

Figures from Deloitte’s Money League revealed Liverpool’s wage bill increased from £386million to £421m last season.

Liverpool players were handed a £20m bonus for winning the Premier League title, with their wage bill surpassing £400m for the very first time.

Arne Slot faces ‘more pressure’ at Liverpool

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Liverpool’s ownership have “every right” to expect Champions League qualification this season.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Slot is now under “more pressure” at Anfield.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s a big wage bill, it’s competitive with everyone else and that’s really where it is.

“We know the [Alexander] Isak injury has been a big factor for them in terms of that situation, but nevertheless, given that sort of number, over £400million, is a very competitive wage bill. And so the owner’s got every right to expect, at the very least, Champions League.

“And that’s the pressure that puts more pressure on Slot given those sorts of numbers coming out right now.”

Contender emerges for Liverpool job

Xabi Alonso is emerging as a front-runner to replace Slot at Liverpool, with the 44-year-old having been out of work since being sacked by Real Madrid in January.

Alonso though had a successful spell as manager of Bayer Leverkusen, and the Spaniard played for Liverpool for five seasons during his playing career.

Slot’s side are facing a battle to qualify for the Champions League next season, with the Reds currently two points behind fourth-placed Man United.
