‘Magnificent’ – Lee Hendrie in awe of what Jarrod Bowen did in West Ham loss vs Nottingham Forest

Jarrod Bowen was still his creative self as West Ham were denied a point at the death against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

Crysencio Summerville wrongly saw his goal disallowed on 6 December, with Morgan Gibbs-White firing home from the penalty spot in the 89th minute to seal a much-needed win away from home.

In what was another disappointing night for the Hammers, Tony Harrington did not help with some refereeing howlers, but the captain kept trying to push ahead in front of a sparse stadium.

Bowen has been linked with a West Ham exit, especially because of the club’s current situation, but he continues to put everything into his performance, and that was clear to Lee Hendrie once again.

Jarrod Bowen nearly carries West Ham through vs Nottingham Forest

Bowen wears his heart on his sleeve, always trying to carry the team through the rough patches, and he looked to do it all himself in the 48th minute when going on a winding run.

Although he ultimately blazed his effort over the bar, it was a clear sign that the Irons are still fighting, as proven by Tomas Soucek‘s post-match interview, and the star winger will continue to battle.

Speaking live on Sky Sports (6 January, 9:04pm), Hendrie could only watch on as Bowen went on a mazy run, saying: “What a magnificent goal this would have been. Bowen is at the heart of it.

“Picks the ball up in his own half, plays it off, then wants the ball back, wants to get in on goal and score. Brilliant play.

Bowen’s performance in numbers at the London Stadium

As well as his mazy run, Bowen created one chance, had five shots, three of which were blocked, while also making nine defensive contributions, and entering into six ground duels [FotMob].

Despite being the major attacking outlet for the Hammers, he is not afraid to get into the dirty side of the game, winning 57 per cent of his aerial duels, 50 per cent of his tackles, and making three recoveries.

His lack of end product was certainly noticeable, though, and that inevitably came back to bite the Hammers, with Taty Castellanos adapting to the league and Summerville popping up in bursts.

Lucas Paqueta was nowhere to be seen on the pitch, with very few others offering much support, other than a late burst down the right flank from Kyle Walker-Peters.

The returns of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and El Hadji Malick Diouf should help a lot at both ends of the pitch, but with the Irons already so many points adrift, it might already be too late.
