Michael Carrick needs to secure Champions League qualification if he wants to be considered for the Manchester United manager’s job on a full-time basis, sources have told Football Insider.

The Red Devils are planning to take their time with their next permanent appointment, as they are keen to avoid the mistakes that have plagued their last few acquisitions in the dugout.

The Manchester United hierarchy are set to evaluate every possible candidate in detail between now and the end of the season, and sources say that a top-four finish would have Carrick firmly within the reckoning.

Football Insider recently revealed that Carrick’s position as United’s interim boss currently has him in the box seat to prove himself as a strong option long-term, after his tenure began with an emphatic victory in Saturday’s Manchester derby.

Man United face favourable run after Arsenal test

Carrick led United to a 2-0 victory over their rivals last weekend, as he oversaw several immediate changes in style from Ruben Amorim’s reign.

The former Middlesbrough boss will be keen to stamp his own image on the team over the next few months, but equally, he will want to avoid derailing a league campaign that still has plenty of promise.

United are currently on course to qualify for the Europa League, but remain just one point behind Liverpool in fourth.

Carrick’s men face the difficult task of a trip to table-topping Arsenal next week, but after that assignment, they face a favourable run of games until the end of February.

Fulham, Tottenham and West Ham are all on the agenda, as United prepare for a five-game spell that sees them take on four teams who currently occupy a place in the bottom half of the table.

Secure a strong set of results from those contests, and it could be enough to propel them up into the top four and have Carrick dreaming of a potential long-term contract.

Michael Carrick set to receive new attacking weapon

Football Insider revealed last week that United want to sign a new left-winger before the end of the January window.

Carrick is working alongside recruitment chief Jason Wilcox in a bid to identify a candidate who could come in and make an impact on the attacking unit in the second half of the season.

The appointment of the interim manager has seen the position become a priority before the 2 February deadline, and the scouting network is now being used to try to find a suitable option for a loan deal.

Carrick will be keen to show that he is capable of leading a club of United’s magnitude, and he will seemingly be provided with the necessary tools to achieve their goals in the second half of the season.
