Leanne Crichton was full of praise for Jack Butland after his match-winning display for Rangers against Motherwell on Saturday.

Butland put in a man-of-the-match performance as Rangers beat Motherwell 1-0 at Ibrox.

The Rangers goalkeeper made a host of crucial saves in both halves, allowing Thelo Aasgaard to net what would be the winning goal on 67 minutes.

Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh was at Ibrox for the Motherwell game, and he will have been mightily impressed by what he saw from Butland.

Rangers Women’s boss Leanne Crichton drops Jack Butland claim

Butland came in for heavy criticism for his performance against Hearts on 21 December, with some feeling that a new goalkeeper would be needed in January.

Reports have even emerged that Rohl wants to sign Sheffield Wednesday shot-stopper Pierce Charles, potentially ending Butland’s tenure as Rangers’ starting goalkeeper.

However, the former Crystal Palace keeper bounced back against Motherwell and showed why he’s won nine caps for England and multiple successful years in the Premier League.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene, Rangers Women’s manager Crichton picked out a couple of players who really caught the eye in the win.

“Credit to Jack Butland, because he had three or four massive saves,” she said.

“Gassama was really lively this afternoon. I think his performance, whether it’s from the left-hand side or the right, was really lively.

“That’s a big save to go and make the save initially, but to make sure it’s out of danger and you don’t clock it back in.”

Jack Butland vs Motherwell by the numbers

Butland’s showing against Motherwell will quiet any talk of him being replaced in January.

But just how well did the 32-year-old play in the Rangers goal, and how much do his team-mates owe him for the three points?

Looking at his stats via Sofascore, he finished the game with a 7.8/10 rating, making five saves – all of which came from inside the box.

Butland was largely accurate with his passing, completing 23 out of 34 attempts, and also had a respectable hit rate on long balls.

Therefore, it’s clear to see just how vital he was to a big three points for Rangers, and more performances like the one against Motherwell should see him cement his long-term future at Ibrox.
