Mathys Tel can’t be blamed as door opens for Tottenham exit to billionaire-backed club
Mathys Tel may have played his last game for Tottenham this season.
Thomas Frank is under increasing pressure as Spurs boss, but the Lewis family is still expected to back the Dane for the run-in of the January transfer window.
Tottenham signed Tel permanently from Bayern Munich this summer after initially impressing under Ange Postecoglou last campaign.
The wide-attacker has shown more glimpses of his raw talent under Frank, but has been limited to opportunities in terms of game time.
Understandably, Tel could now be on his way out of Hotspur Way in the coming days.
Mathys Tel wants Tottenham exit with Roma lurking
Tel has been starting more recently under Frank, which may signal the 20-year-old’s last chance to impress the head coach with January now here.
The young forward started in Tottenham’s damaging 2-1 loss to West Ham on Saturday, but was unable to have a significant impact on the game, and may subsequently be shown the door.
- Tel has three goals in 20 games this season
- He has scored just six times in 40 appearances for Spurs
- Tottenham paid around £30million for Tel this summer
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition on Thursday, pressure has increased in recent hours on Tel potentially moving to Roma on loan.
It’s been known for a while that the Frenchman wants to leave on loan due to his aspirations of playing for his country at this year’s World Cup.

There are multiple names that Roma are looking at as wide options, but Tel’s preference to temporarily leave N17 is understandable.
He joins a growing list of teammates who have been reported to want out of Tottenham in recent weeks, which is convenient given Frank’s current failings.
Tottenham already have Tel replacement ready
The Lilywhites made the decision to keep Tel in the summer instead of loaning him out there and then. While he has had some minutes, the winger should find a club that can guarantee him first-team football.
However, it seems like Spurs already have their replacement for Tel in mind after watching Crysencio Summerville‘s performance against them on the weekend.
Summerville against Tottenham:
- Minutes played: 90
- Goals: One
- Dribbles: Two
- Chances created: Three
According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham have inquired about signing Summerville from West Ham, with the Dutchman now seemingly starting to grow in performances for the Hammers.
West Ham are in a fight for survival, and the Lilywhites would most likely have to bid higher than the £25million that was spent on signing Summerville in the first place.
It would be an ambitious move by the Lewis Family, which would signal a statement of intent for short-term success, with Tel one for the future.
