Mathys Tel: Tottenham starlet primed to play key role after Roberto De Zerbi transfer admission
Mathys Tel is surely primed to start for Tottenham Hotspur in their trip to face Sunderland on Sunday afternoon.
The Frenchman has endured a difficult campaign since joining from Bayern Munich permanently last summer, as previous manager Thomas Frank initially left him out of the Champions League squad.
However, he has come back into the fold as a regular starter in recent weeks, and new boss Roberto De Zerbi has already dropped a huge hint that it is set to continue into his reign in the final weeks of the season.
Supporters have been desperately trying to work out how the new boss will set the team up for the first game at the helm, and they are set to find out imminently at the Stadium of Light.
Tottenham need a victory over Sunderland after their relegation rivals West Ham won on Friday night, and Tel is set to be given a big responsibility in the trip to Wearside.

Roberto De Zerbi tried to sign Mathys Tel at Marseille
De Zerbi is finally set to take charge of Tottenham’s relegation battle, after the club hierarchy worked hard to tempt him into taking the job immediately.
The Italian has a reputation for being one of the best tactical minds in European football at the moment, but he will need to make an instant impact if he is to lift the Lilywhites clear of trouble.

He will need brave and fearless players if he is to do that, and as a result, Tel is surely in line to start as part of his maiden team selection.
De Zerbi suggested on Friday that he tried to sign the 20-year-old during his time in charge of Marseille, according to The Lilywhite Rose podcast, which is a clear indication that he is a big believer in the youngster’s ability.
Tel has shown with his recent performances that he is ready to be direct and take the game to the opposition, and De Zerbi will surely be keen to give him the confidence to play on the front foot.
The youngster is still relatively raw and unpredictable in terms of his decision-making on the pitch, but his ability to commit defenders and make things happen looks set to give him a starring role in Spurs’ relegation battle.
Tel’s future at Tottenham is clear if they stay up
Football Insider revealed back in January that Tottenham had no plans to let Tel leave during the mid-season window, either on a permanent or loan basis.
The former Rennes man is seen as being an important part of the long-term project in North London, and De Zerbi’s appointment rubber stamps that even further.
He will want to be able to fully utilise Tel’s ability during his first full season in charge next term, and could even make him a regular starter in the wide areas.
With De Zerbi at the helm, there is surely no chance of Tel being sold, provided that the team can secure their Premier League status for another year.
However, fail to do that, and it would be no surprise to see him become part of a mass exodus at the club ahead of next season.
