Mauricio Pochettino shares what staff inside Tottenham are feeling as he reacts to relegation nightmare

Mauricio Pochettino has lifted the lid on what the general feeling inside Tottenham Hotspur is right now as they fight to secure their Premier League survival.

The Argentine will always be remembered fondly at Tottenham after turning them into a side that regularly qualified for the Champions League and competed for trophies.

Pochettino has repeatedly been linked with a Tottenham return, after five successful years at the north London team between 2014 and 2019, but for now, he is the United States’ national team head coach.

Fast forward to the present, and Tottenham are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship as they sit 18th, two points behind 17th-placed West Ham.

Ahead of Tottenham’s crunch clash with Aston Villa on Sunday, Pochettino admits Spurs’ current plight is “really sad” with only four games left to play.

Tottenham are ‘suffering’ right now

When Pochettino was sacked by Tottenham in late 2019, they were a few months on from making the Champions League final.

And while their Europa League win last season may have papered over the cracks, Tottenham are at risk of going down for the first time since 1977.

Roberto De Zerbi is currently tasked with keeping Tottenham up, with the Italian ending their 15-game winless run with victory at Wolves on Saturday.

And Pochettino appears to share Tottenham fans’ pain about the club’s current state.

He said on the latest episode of Stick to Football, “It is really sad. I really love Tottenham, it’s always going to be an important part of my life. The people inside the club and also the fans are really suffering.”

Tottenham fans will hope their suffering does not continue at the hands of Villa on Sunday at Villa Park.

Tottenham ‘missed the last step’

Pochettino also suggested that his vision for Tottenham conflicted with the Spurs hierarchy. And after not refreshing the squad to his desires in the summer of 2019, a poor start to the season cost the Argentine his job.

Tottenham have a world-class training ground and stadium, but do not pay the sort of wages that some of the Premier League’s top clubs fork out. And Pochettino touched upon that too when reflecting on his Tottenham spell.

He added, “It’s a shame. We were winning every season because, with all the circumstances that we were fighting, we spent 18 months with no one signing. That was a record in the Premier League.

“We had money to spend, but not the type of money to improve, to be close to winning or to challenge. We challenged, we challenged to win. But we missed this last step.”

Pochettino’s Tottenham return would be celebrated, but that seems wholly unlikely for the foreseeable future.
