Mauricio Pochettino wants Tottenham return as ex-Spurs player speaks out

Mauricio Pochettino is still hugely respected by Tottenham fans.

The Argentinian took charge of Spurs in May 2014 and enjoyed over five brilliant years in N17, leading the side to a second-placed Premier League finish in 2016-2017, and a Champions League final in 2019.

Pochettino was sacked on in November 2019, and he has since gone on to manage Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and the USA international team, where he remains in charge ahead of the World Cup.

He has not had the same levels of admiration he gained at Tottenham at any of his other jobs, and supporters would love the idea of him coming back to win a piece of silverware.

Pochettino has been tipped to make a return to Tottenham, and a former Spurs striker believes it could become realistic after the 2026 World Cup.

Alan Brazil tips Mauricio Pochettino to return to Spurs in the summer

Alan Brazil played for Tottenham in the 1983-84 season, making 31 appearances and scoring nine goals.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 14 January, he said he believes Pochettino would jump at the chance to return to N17.

He said: “He’s a really nice guy. I think he wants to come back.

Daniel Levy has gone now, so maybe he could come back after the World Cup.”

Pochettino’s Tottenham record

Levy’s Tottenham departure in September was certainly a shocking one, although it could mean great things for Pochettino’s potential return.

Having been the chairman for almost 25 years, the businessman was under scrutiny for a prolonged period due to his lack of ambition in the transfer market.

Levy failed to invest in new Tottenham signings after Spurs lost the Champions League final in 2019, and this contributed to the team’s decline under Pochettino, and ultimately led to his sacking.

Whether the job is available in the summer is another question, although the way things are going under Thomas Frank at the moment, there may be a chance for Pochettino.

Why the Tottenham job could be available for Pochettino in the summer

Frank is under pressure at Tottenham after an underwhelming first half to the season, with the Lilywhites sitting 14th in the Premier League table.

The results at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have been woeful, and the FA Cup third-round exit to Aston Villa on Saturday left supporters furious.

The Dane’s style of play has come under criticism, and it is the polar opposite from Ange Postecoglou’s philosophy that helped Spurs win the Europa League in May.

Premier League table

With Frank only a couple of results away from being sacked, Spurs could begin negotiations with Pochettino in order to convince him to join after the World Cup.

Not only would fans get behind him, but they would finally enjoy watching their team play football again.

If he were to say yes, then Spurs could appoint an interim manager until the end of the season and start planning ahead for Pochettino’s arrival.

Of course, it all depends on Frank being sacked in the first place, but hardly any Tottenham fan currently believes that he is the right man to take them forward.

Not many supporters would say that about Pochettino.
