Rangers have been able to conclude a deal to move one of their fringe players on deadline day.
Rangers have around 40 minutes left in the window to finalise any incoming business, with Ryan Naderi still expected to make the move.
The Light Blues have agreed a fee in the region of £5.1million to secure his arrival, with an official announcement expected either later in the night or perhaps on Tuesday.
However, Naderi wasn’t the only late deal that the Gers were trying to push through, with an exit from Ibrox also confirmed after some initial uncertainty.
Rangers midfielder secures Ibrox exit
Mainly due to a lack of gametime, Rangers have already had to move several players on in the winter transfer window.
One of the players to have suffered from Danny Rohl’s appointment at Rangers is Joe Rothwell, who has played just 19 minutes in their last five games, and none in the league.
Rothwell looked set for a comfortable move to Sheffield United after Chris Wilder spoke out on the interest, but the deal became radio silent well past the English deadline of 7pm.
It was starting to look like the deal was in doubt, having had no confirmation of a deal sheet being submitted.
However, his move to Bramall Lane was confirmed half an hour later, as per an Instagram post on Sheffield United’s account.
Rothwell has joined the Championship club on an 18-month deal, with Max Aarons liking the post announcing his arrival.
What went wrong for Joe Rothwell at Rangers?
Rothwell was never likely to be the type of midfielder to thrive at Rangers, given the relentless pressing and energy that is needed in games.
His best spells throughout his career have come in the Championship, when he is able to play as that sitting midfielder and dictate play at his own pace.
However, with such high expectations at Ibrox, that style of play was never going to see him succeed.
Rohl’s continued omission of the Englishman proves that, with the likes of Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande preferred ahead of him.
Rothwell will almost certainly thrive under Wilder at Sheffield United, but that will not say anything about the reasons his move to Rangers failed.
