Middlesbrough fans fume at what ‘utterly useless’ Morgan Whittaker did vs Charlton: ‘£6m down the drain’
Middlesbrough fans have torn into Morgan Whittaker for his poor performance in their 1-0 loss to Charlton Athletic in the Championship on Wednesday night.
Middlesbrough’s automatic promotion hopes suffered a huge blow as Charlton stole all three points from the Riverside Stadium to hand them their third league defeat in 2026.
Kim Hellberg’s side had beaten Birmingham and QPR convincingly prior to Wednesday’s clash against the relegation-threatened Addicks, but failed to capitalise on their domination of the chances and possession.
Conor Coady grabbed the winner for Charlton in the 59th minute, meaning they are now nine points away from the bottom three and nearly safe for another season.
Boro remain second in the Championship on 69 points, but are just one point ahead of third-placed Millwall after they beat Derby on Tuesday.
Boro fans fume at Morgan Whittaker after ‘dreadful’ showing vs Charlton
Whittaker was hooked off in the 58th minute after he failed to create a chance and had just one speculative shot on target minutes before the break.
He lost possession five times and also failed to complete a successful dribble on the right flank, while taking just four touches in Charlton’s box despite Boro’s domination of the ball.
The 25-year-old has now failed to score in any of his last eight Championship games as Middlesbrough chase promotion to the Premier League.
Taking to X to react to his performance, one fan said: “6 million down the drain, Whittaker 5/10 again.”
While another said: “Playing with 10 men, take Whittaker out of the firing line before it gets too much.”
And one supporter added: “I love Hellberg and all, but he needs to drop Whittaker. If he can’t see what we’ve seen every week, we’re beginning to have some issues. How can none of our wingers bring more to the table?”
Middlesbrough may live to regret failed Will Lankshear chase
Boro have scored 18 fewer league goals than table toppers Coventry this season, while the likes of Ipswich and Hull have both also scored more than them in the Championship so far.
Whittaker is their top scorer with 11 strikes so far, but is clearly in poor form, while other attackers, like Tommy Conway and David Strelec, have struggled to find the net consistently throughout the campaign.
Football Insider revealed this week that Middlesbrough missed out on Lankshear in January as he decided against leaving relegation strugglers Oxford United.
They may well live to regret that failed approach as the season reaches its conclusion, especially since he has scored two in his last three games to help the U’s move closer to Championship safety.
