Newcastle United on track to match astonishing record
Newcastle United are set to take on Aston Villa on Sunday in what could be a massive game for both clubs’ Champions League ambitions.
The Magpies have returned to form recently and have won four of their last six matches in all competitions.
Their newfound confidence was on show on Wednesday when Newcastle cruised past PSV at St James’ Park with a 3-0 win in the Champions League.
However, Eddie Howe’s side arguably face their toughest test in 2026 yet on Sunday when they welcome Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, who are currently chasing the Premier League title.
Yet, on top of three points, the Magpies could also match a sensational record at St James’ Park.
Newcastle could match record at St James’ Park that has stood since 1932
Recent matches at St James’ Park have been full of goals.
The last time a Premier League match was hosted at the stadium, Newcastle ran out 4-3 winners against Leeds United, with Harvey Barnes scoring a sensational late goal to win the match in the 102nd minute.
As a result, BBC Sport on 24 January has now confirmed that Newcastle’s last eight home matches in the top-flight have resulted in at least two goals for the Magpies.

If Howe can repeat this feat on Sunday, it will be the first time they have scored two or more goals at St James’ Park for nine consecutive games in the top-flight since the 1931-32 campaign.
However, with Aston Villa also on form, it will no doubt be a difficult task for Howe and the Magpies to achieve this.
Newcastle United’s record vs Aston Villa explained
Newcastle have a pretty solid record against Aston Villa.
In their last eight meetings, they have come out on top five times, with the Birmingham outfit only winning twice.
In fact, the Magpies have often dominated matches against Villa, winning 76 of their overall meetings, compared to their 60 victories.

Earlier in the season, Newcastle drew 0-0 at Villa Park, with the early Premier League clash proving to be uninspiring for both sets of fans.
However, Howe will be looking to continue his good record against the Birmingham outfit as Magpies manager on Sunday as he looks to improve their chances of qualifying for the Champions League at the end of the season.
