Odd slashed: Gareth Southgate backed to seal Premier League management return

Gareth Southgate is expected to be involved in several conversations at Premier League clubs this summer.

Oliver Glasner is expected to leave Crystal Palace, who have been linked with various names over the past few weeks.

Man United are also looking for a manager, with Michael Carrick‘s interim appointment due to come to an end in the summer.

The former midfielder has led the Red Devils to victories over Man City and Arsenal in his opening two games and could convince decision-makers to give him the job permanently, however.

Tottenham have also been tipped to sack Thomas Frank, with Arne Slot also expected to be under big pressure at Liverpool.

Gareth Southgate tipped for top flight return

Southgate has not returned to management since his resignation as England manager in July 2024.

The Englishman led his country for over 100 games and announced his departure shortly after the Euro 2024 final, which was lost to Spain.

Southgate was in the international set-up from 2011, after his dismissal at Middlesbrough in 2009.

The 55-year-old was appointed by Boro in 2006, ironically replacing Steve McLaren, who had been named England manager.

He would lead his team for 151 games, and was sacked during the 2009-10 Championship season despite his team having been a favourite to go straight back up following their relegation in the previous campaign.

Southgate has not shown any desire to return to club management in the years since, but Palace – where he spent much of his club career – could be able to tempt him back.

The former England manager has been named the favourite at 5/1 to take over at Selhurst Park by one major bookmaker, with Jose Bordalas (7/1) and Roger Schmidt (8/1) following closely.

What has Southgate said about return to management?

A return to club management at this point for Southgate would require a huge adaptation.

Almost a decade with England will be difficult to move on from to prioritise a club, and the 55-year-old has said as much.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” Southgate told BBC Radio 4 in November.

“That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Links will continue, however, and it will remain to be seen how Southgate actually responds if offered the reins in the Premier League.
