Paul Merson visibly shocked at what he saw in Tottenham draw vs Burnley – ‘Oh my word’

Tottenham were held to a 2-2 draw by relegation-threatened Burnley on Saturday.

Thomas Frank remained under huge pressure heading into Tottenham‘s clash with Burnley on Saturday, with Spurs looking for their first Premier League win since 28 December last year.

Spurs assistant John Heitinga has been tipped to take interim charge if Frank is sacked, with many supporters unconvinced by what they’ve seen in the dugout this season.

Tottenham were able to beat Dortmund 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night, but the German side played with 10 from the 24th minute onwards, and it’s a win that’s done little to quiet down the sack talk around N17.

Paul Merson left stunned by Pedro Porro moment vs Burnley

As such, Saturday’s trip to Turf Moor was yet another huge game for Frank as Tottenham head coach, with anything but a win being acceptable.

Tottenham were heavy favourites to beat Burnley, with Scott Parker’s side sitting 19th in the Premier League and winless in the division since 26 October 2025.

Spurs took the lead through Micky van de Ven on 38 minutes, as it looked as though the flying Dutchman’s goal would take his team into half-time with the lead.

However, Axel Tuanzebe turned home a brilliant cross from former Spurs defender Kyle Walker in added time at the end of the first half to make it 1-1.

And after failing to capitalise on some early second half pressure, Burnley grew stronger into the game before Lyle Foster netted to make it 2-1 with 76 minutes on the clock, but that’s not how the scores would stay.

Indeed, Cristian Romero would score in his second consecutive game to equalise in added time, with his powerful header picked out by a brilliant cross from Wilson Odobert to steal a 2-2 draw at the end.

It was still yet another highly disappointing day at the office for both Frank and many wearing Tottenham shirts, not least Pedro Porro, who was substituted off at half-time.

But, the Spanish wideman did go mightily close to giving Spurs the lead on 22 minutes, as his free-kick from just outside the box on the left missed the top corner by a matter of inches.

This caused a shocked reaction in the Sky Sports studio by pundit Paul Merson, who reacted in three short words, saying: “Oh my word.”

Porro vs Burnley by the numbers

As aforementioned, Saturday’s draw to Burnley was not one of Porro’s finest afternoons in a Tottenham shirt.

The 26-year-old has largely been a strong player for Spurs since his summer 2023 move from Sporting, but he has had problems staying consistent in his performances at times.

Burnley was one of his worst halves of football this season though, as he struggled to provide any attacking output in terms of crosses and dribbles down the right.

As per Sofascore, Porro registered an expected goals (xG) number of 0.09, failed to deliver his one attempted cross accurately and completed just 67 per cent of his pass attempts from within his own half.

He lost possession a whopping 14 times, and made just one progressive carry with the ball.
