Pundit in disbelief at what he saw in Aston Villa vs Everton, it was a new Premier League record

Everton almost had the perfect start to the game away to Aston Villa.

Heading into this clash, the Toffees had won just one of their last seven, showcasing how important it was for Everton to secure all three points against Aston Villa, and courtesy of Thierno Barry, they did.

Once again, Iliman Ndiaye, Idrissa Gueye, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Michael Keane were among those missing from the game, with the likes of Merlin Rohl and Nathan Patterson handed a chance as a result.

Rohl in particular has a lot of work to do to showcase his worth in the Premier League, and the German midfielder did something that had Dion Dublin stunned.

Merlin Rohl made history for Everton vs Aston Villa

When Everton were knocked out of the FA Cup by Sunderland, a large reason behind that was their slow start to the game.

Coming up against Unai Emery’s Villa, they knew that would hurt them if repeated, and it was instead the Toffees who started the game brightly, and almost in perfect fashion.

Jordan Pickford launched a long ball forward almost directly from kick off, with Thierno Barry knocking the ball down to Rohl, whose effort was perhaps weak, but still made it past Emi Martinez before coming back off the upright.

Speaking via BBC Radio 5 Live, Dublin said: “I cannot believe how quickly that chance came. Merlin Rohl bounced into the box, and he beat Emiliano Martinez. Who said the long ball was dead? It worked again.”

Everton hit the post after just 11 seconds, which is the quickest any side has done so on record in the Premier League.

David Moyes now knows how to get the best out of Merlin Rohl

It wasn’t the perfect display for Rohl, but it was night and day in comparison to the performances we have seen from him earlier in the season.

The German will no doubt have hopes to have more involvement in the second half, but he was still able to demonstrate how he is better in a deeper role, playing alongside James Garner.

Idrissa Gueye’s imminent return from AFCON will no doubt impact his ability to maintain that consistency, but Moyes can take heart from the fact he is more than capable in that position.

However, if he is to do that, he needs to be playing regular minutes, even if that is off the bench from time to time.
