Raheem Sterling messages Max Dowman after what Arsenal sensation did vs Mansfield Town

Raheem Sterling has sent Arsenal youngster Max Dowman a message of support after he featured on Saturday.

The 16-year-old was named in the starting line-up for just the second time in his short career so far as the Gunners beat Mansfield Town 2-1 to progress to the FA Cup quarter-final.

Noni Madueke opened the scoring in the first half when he curled into the top corner, but the Gunners failed to build on their momentum.

Will Evans struck back for the League One outfit after the break, but substitute Eberechi Eze would power home the winner shortly after.

Arsenal’s victory has kept their hopes of recording a first quadruple in English history alive.

Raheem Sterling sends Max Dowman message

Dowman has been missing for around three months after suffering a significant ankle injury at the back end of last year.

The talent had already proven his readiness for first-team football in his appearances at the start of the season, but Saturday’s clash was a welcome reminder.

The England youth international exuded confidence, constantly picking up the ball from his teammates and driving forward, before producing a pass or a shot.

Dowman was unlucky not to score when he went on a mazy run in the second half, producing a fine save from Liam Roberts.

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider in November that Man United want their own Dowman, such is the excitement surrounding the teenager.

The prospect took to Instagram after the game, sharing a picture of himself, Bukayo Saka, Eze and Madueke.

Sterling, who has recently completed his move to Feyenoord, commented on the post with a raised hands emoji.

What Mikel Arteta said about Dowman

Mikel Arteta has been accused in the past of failing to introduce youth prospects fast enough, with many believing the Spaniard is too keen to play it safe with his team selection.

That accusation can certainly not be levelled at him in the case of Dowman, who has broken all manner of records this season. The 16-year-old became the youngest-ever Arsenal player to appear in the FA Cup on Sunday.

“Very proud of him, very proud as well of Marli [Salmon],” said Arteta after the game. “Obviously two 16-year-olds starting in the FA Cup.

“That tells us a lot about them, their personality and the quality that they have. Max, I think, was exceptional. I congratulated them.”
