Rangers steal march on Rohl's rivals for Premier League midfielder - report

Rangers may have taken a step closer towards signing Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil this month.

Rangers have already added three players to Danny Rohl‘s side, with Tochi Chukwuani, Tuur Rommens and Andreas Skov Olsen coming through the Ibrox doors.

The Gers still need additions if they are to maintain their Scottish Premiership title race, and midfield is an area of concern.

Neil looks set to be available as, Mike McGrath of The Telegraph, claimed on 23 January that he has not travelled with the Mackems’ squad for their clash with West Ham.

Rangers lead the way in race for Dan Neil’s signature

Rangers are not the only club in for Neil, as Sheffield United also want to add him to their squad in the winter transfer window.

However, a report from The Star on 23 January claimed that the Light Blues have stolen a march on Chris Wilder’s side in the race for the Black Cats ace.

Obviously, Rohl still has a connection to his former club, Sheffield Wednesday, so getting one over on his former rivals will please him.

What will Neil bring to Rangers?

Neil was a key part in Sunderland’s play-off glory last season, but he has found his role reduced at the Stadium of Light this season.

He has featured just three times in the top-flight, and he would surely enjoy the challenge of winning a first-team place with the Gers.

The 24-year-old has a brilliant passing range and vision, but is also capable of breaking up play defensively, and making tackles and interceptions, due to his relentless engine.

That versatility could be a huge help to the former Owls manager, as his side have been lacking the pace and physicality in midfield that is needed to come out on top at the end of the campaign.

His leadership may be his best attribute, though, and should help Rohl’s side in their title fight, as he captained the Black Cats throughout their promotion season, so he has experience when it comes to crunch time.

Neil would be a great addition for the Bears, and if they are in pole position for his signature, then that should give the fanbase a huge amount of encouragement.
