Revealed: This is why Celtic want Jens Berthel Askou to become their next manager
Jens Berthel Askou has emerged as the front-runner to land the Celtic job thanks to Motherwell’s performances this season, sources have told Football Insider.
While they have been impressed by their results in what has been a strong season for The Steelmen, their style of play has led to high praise from across Scotland.
Sources say Celtic chiefs have been wowed by their displays and feel Askou would be the ideal fit if he could bring his dominant style to Parkhead.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, the Motherwell boss has quickly risen to the top of their list of candidates.
While he is not the only contender as Celtic continue to assess potential new managers, the 43-year-old ticks a lot of boxes for what the Hoops are looking for.

Celtic impressed by Jens Berthel Askou
Football Insider revealed on 20 March that Askou is high on Celtic’s managerial shortlist ahead of the summer as they continue to put plans in place.
Askou has led his side to fourth place in the Scottish Premiership, behind the leading three of Hearts, Celtic and Rangers, in a massively impressive season.
Scottish Premiership Stats 2025-26 Motherwell Celtic Games 31 30 Wins / Draws / Losses 14 / 12 / 5 19 / 4 / 7 Goals For 49 56 Goals For per Game 1.58 1.87 Goals Against 23 32 Goals Against per Game 0.74 1.06
His transformation with Mothwell this season has highlighted him as one of the top bosses in Scotland, while his knowledge of the league is a useful asset.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Yeah, I’m sure because of what he’s done at Motherwell, Askou is definitely in the reckoning for Celtic.
“He’s really transformed Motherwell since his arrival, but it’s not just their form, it’s the performances, they’ve arguably probably been the best side in Scotland this year.
“Their style of play has been really impressive, real possession style based football and they’ve been a joy to watch so I’m sure that will bring eyes on Askou.
“I’m sure it’s something Celtic have been impressed by and will continue to keep tabs on.
“Askou will be somebody that will definitely be in their thinking because of what he’s done at Motherwell on a small budget.
“Obviously he knows the league now as well, so that would be in his favour as well if Celtic want to bring somebody in as manager next season with the experience of working in Scotland.”
Who else is a contender for the Celtic job?
While Askou remains the front-runner to land the Celtic job in the summer, he is far from the only contender, and other top candidates are being assessed.
Football Insider revealed last month that Roberto Martinez is a target for Celtic and ranks alongside Askou as one of the favourites for the position.

Martinez will lead Portugal at the World Cup this summer with ambitions of success, but there is a feeling he could be lured away from the post after the tournament.
Sources say the Glasgow giants are happy to play the long game if there is an indication that the 52-year-old is ready to return to club management.
He has previously been linked with the Celtic role, way back in 2009 before he ended up at Wigan and took them to FA Cup glory, and could now be a contender again.
Target: Elijah Just (Motherwell)
Long-term: Carter-Vickers out
League Pos: 2nd (61 pts)
Status: Summer Talks Underway
Revenue: £143.6m (2025)
