'Ridiculous, Crazy' - Rangers star leaves Sky Sports pundits in disbelief at what he did vs Celtic

Thelo Aasgaard was slammed by Rangers and Celtic pundits alike for his bizarre decision with his side in trouble at Parkhead.

Despite the Hoops being in disarray since the arrival of Wilfried Nancy as manager the Light Blues managed to make the hosts look and feel as confident as ever in the first half after a brief flurry in the opening minutes.

Yang Hyun-Jun opened the scoring after 20 minutes as he ran through three or four Rangers players, including Aasgaard, and smashed in high from an angle.

The Norwegian international had looked off the required pace early a number of times, playing weak touches or failing to run hard for loose balls, and the pressure looked to have completely got to him in the 30th minute.

Thelo Aasgaard hammered for crazy pass under pressure

Picking up the ball just outside the right corner of his own box after Dujon Sterling had dispossessed Luke McCowan Aasgaard dithered on the ball before floating a clipped pass across the pitch towards Jayden Meghoma.

The lack of urgency on the ball and the poor choice of destination made it easy for Yang to spring forward and win the header ahead of Meghoma, forcing Emmanuel Fernandez into a tussle for the loose ball in the area with Johnny Kenny, which luckily for Aasgaard he won.

Laughing in disbelief on the Sky Sports match commentary Chris Sutton couldn’t believe what he’d seen and said: “I tell you what. What a ridiculous pass from Aasgaard there, across his box.”

Neil McCann responded: “Well, I’m glad you picked that out, Chris, because I was going to say the same thing.

“A square pass, generally, along the ground is dangerous enough. A little, clipped one, into an area where someone can go and spring the counter-attack from that is just crazy stuff.”

As highlighted in the Sofascore graphic above Aasgaard’s impact wasn’t especially telling, but much of the issue was with elements of his game that wouldn’t register in the statistics.

Rangers would stun Celtic 3-1 after completely turning the game in the second half, without Aasgaard on the pitch, as the unlikely figure of Youssef Chermiti scored twice before Mikey Moore added a third.

What ended up as a potentially-season-altering victory had looked unlikely to be anything of the sort in the first 45.

Rangers could move Aasgard on after Old Firm failures

It was absolutely no surprised when Danny Rohl substituted Aasgard at the half since the 23-year-old was so far off the pace in a game where it matters more than any.

The attacking midfielder has now played in three Old Firms and, after the dismal goalless draw in August where neither side did anything of much note, he has now been sent off in the first half of the Premier Sports Cup semi final defeat, and been hooked at the break in the league before his teammates turned it around without him.

Rangers have transfer listed five players, including Danilo and Nedim Bajrami, for the January window and if he’s not careful Aasgaard will play himself out of the club sooner rather than later.

It is a measure of the mess the Light Blues continually get themselves into in recent years that they are forever needing to get rid of failed signings.

It might be harsh to pull the plug on a £3.5million summer recruit without giving them more time to adapt, but three goals and one assist from 28 Gers outings is nothing to write home about, and major failings in the derby does him no favours.

That two of his goals came in the previous two games, wins over Motherwell and St Mirren, looked like turning a corner but his performance at Parkhead saw him turn back in a big way.
