Rohl wants former midfielder to join Rangers amid Premier League interest- report
Shea Charles is a target for Rangers in the summer, with Danny Rohl keen to reunite with the midfielder.
The defensive midfielder played 44 games under the current Gers boss in the 2024-25, and he wants to bring him to Govan.
However, Premier League sides such as Everton and Manchester United are also monitoring the 22-year-old Southampton ace, who scored the winning goal to knock Arsenal out of the FA Cup.
The report from the Daily Mail on 6 April claims that the Gers recognise that they will not be able to match the financial might of the English top-flight for the £20million-rated star.
Rangers have to face up to the brutal reality, that they cannot compete with those riches even with the 49ers enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh’s backing.
🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨
The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.
Why do Rangers need Charles signing?
Rangers have lacked bite in midfield in recent months, and it is one area of the squad that could be improved.
Charles is a highly technical defensive midfielder, who specialises in breaking up play and starting attacks from the base of the engine room.
Charles’ stats for Southampton this season Championship Matches 24 Interceptions 0.8 Tackles per game 1.7 Clearances per game 1.4 Balls recoveries per game 4.1 Ground duels won 59% Aerial duels won 49%
If they cannot compete and sign him, it would be a huge shame, as he would be exactly what they need to either defend their title, or come back and take it.
Who could Rangers add instead?
Rangers have several other options if they are outmuscled when it comes to the Saints star, as they have been linked with at least three players.
Interest in Jens Hjerto-Dahl continues to persist, while their pursuit of Silas Andersen could be reignited when the market reopens.
David Watson is a homegrown option, and the Gers are known to be exploring the Scottish market with interest in centre-back Luke Graham emerging in recent days.
Stats (league) Hjerto-Dahl Andersen Watson Matches 2 1 29 Interceptions 1 2 0.9 Tackles per game 0.5 3 1.8 Clearances per game 1 1 1.1 Ball recoveries per game 3 8 3.1 Ground duels won 25% 68% 47% Aerial duels won 67% N/A 40%
All three would be solid improvements to the Light Blues side, but Charles would be the best, especially considering his connection with Rohl.
He will already know his system and be able to slot right into the base of the Auchenhowie side’s midfield due to his familiarity with the tactical demands of the manager.
However, if they are out of the race as they can’t compete for his signature, one of the back-up signings will have to do.
