Seamus Coleman contract set to expire: Update on talks, Moyes' feelings and more

Seamus Coleman’s 17-year association with Everton could come to an end this summer.

The veteran has been one of the best right-backs in the Premier League over the years, but he has struggled with injuries recently.

The Republic of Ireland international has played a total of eight league matches in the last two seasons, with a total of 227 minutes to his name.

Goodison News assesses his contract situation and whether Coleman will remain at Everton beyond the summer.

Have Everton held talks with Coleman?

There is no indication that the Blues have held contract talks with Coleman at the moment, with his current deal set to expire.

He signed a one-year extension in May, which will keep him on Merseyside until 30 June 2026, but whether he stays after that, remains to be seen.

It would not be a surprise if the Toffees were working on something behind the scenes, but no details have emerged yet.

Has Moyes revealed Coleman’s future?

Moyes has made his desire to keep the Irishman around very clear in the past.

Speaking on Coleman’s future in May 2025, he said: “I need him here, his leadership, his message he has amongst the players in the dressing room.

“It would be wrong of me to let him go, so, one way or another, Seamus will be here next season [2025-26].”

The Scotsman has already suggested that the 37-year-old could move into a coaching role.

Speaking in March 2025, he said: “Seamus might be a great person to have around as an extra, who if he wasn’t playing all the games might be able to play in the Under-21s.

“There’re a lot of teams, who’ve gone with that sort of thing, he could also maybe be a coach with the younger boys if that’s what he chooses to do.”

Coleman already has his coaching badges, and took charge of the team in the FA Cup win over Peterborough United alongside Leighton Baines last season when Sean Dyche was sacked.

Why is Coleman so beloved at Everton?

Coleman has forged out a career that solidifies him as an Everton legend, by any definition, with 433 appearances for the club.

He is a role model for every member of the squad, young or old, with 33,836 minutes of football for the Hill Dickinson Stadium outfit.

The £60,000 fee that the Blues paid to Sligo Rovers for his signature will go down as one of biggest bargains in top-flight history, and it was worth every penny.

Evertonians will be praying that he sticks around, whether that is on the pitch or off it, as he epitomises what it means to be a Toffees player.

It is a huge shame that he has not helped them to end their 30-year trophy drought, but he will go down in the history books regardless.
