Sean Dyche has already given his answer over Tottenham job as links persist

Sean Dyche is the shock favourite to become the next Tottenham Hotspur manager – but he may not be quite as keen on the job as first thought.

Dyche’s odds of landing the role tumbled overnight after Spurs’ 5-2 thrashing at the hands of Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday.

For now, Igor Tudor remains in charge, and he appeared to have been given a stay of execution after it was confirmed he will take this Friday’s pre-match press conference.

But with Spurs teetering on the brink of relegation and a daunting trip to Liverpool up next on Sunday, they could yet decide to turn to Dyche in the coming weeks.

What has Sean Dyche said about new job offers?

Dyche remains out of work after being sacked by Nottingham Forest in February, having left them three points above the bottom three following a brief 114-day stint.

However, his impressive track record at saving clubs from the drop has led him to be linked with Spurs, who are in desperate need of a relegation specialist.

Addressing his dismissal from the City Ground, the 54-year-old revealed he has already received several job offers from “top” sides, but is in no rush to return to management.

“So if I choose to step away, it will be my choice,” he told The Football Boardroom podcast. “It won’t be because no one will employ me.

“I could certainly; I’ve had offers already, by the way, so that’s not a problem. Top level.

“But the point is, you go, Do I need that? Do I want to make a decision? Not at the moment.’

These comments may well ring the alarm bells at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, especially in light of the lack of viable alternatives currently available.

However, it should be stressed that direct contact with Dyche is not yet believed to have taken place, while he would also only likely be handed a short-term deal.

That would seemingly open the door for longstanding favourite Mauricio Pochettino, who is preparing to lead the USMNT into a home World Cup this summer.

Dyche would learn from Igor Tudor mistakes

Eyebrows may well have been raised in N17 after the first links to Dyche became public, but there is actually sound reasoning behind the potential appointment.

The bottom line is that the former Burnley and Everton boss has been there and done it in the lower reaches of the Premier League, and knows exactly what it takes to keep clubs up.

He would restore a back-to-basics approach at Spurs, working specifically on defensive drills and transitions, which would, at least on paper, suit the squad perfectly.

Dyche has also been praised for getting the best out of his players and would be the polar opposite of Tudor, whose hard-line man-management has compounded relegation fears.

Either way, the clock is ticking. Tottenham’s hierarchy have an almighty decision to make.
