Maximiliano Araújo is attracting attention from some of the top clubs in the world ahead of the 2026 summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old Uruguayan, who joined Sporting from Mexican side Toluca in 2024, has developed into one of the most dependable and versatile players in Portugal.

His ability to operate both as a traditional left-back and an advanced wing-back has made him an increasingly valuable asset in modern football, sources close to the agents industry have informed CaughtOffside.

Both Manchester United and Chelsea are showing interest in signing the attacking full-back this summer.

With the game evolving toward full-backs who can contribute heavily in attack as well as defense, Araújo fits the profile of a player capable of making an immediate impact in one of Europe’s top leagues.

The defender has made 36 appearances for the Portuguese club in all competitions this season.

Araújo has shown consistency and versatility

During the 2025-26 campaign, Araújo has been a central figure in Sporting’s tactical system.

Whether pushing forward to create width or dropping back to defend against elite attackers.

Several standout displays, including energetic showings in Champions League fixtures, such as the high-intensity clash against Arsenal, have strengthened his reputation as a “big stage player”.

Statistically, Araújo has also impressed. For a player operating primarily in defensive areas, his contributions in terms of assists and attacking involvement have been notable.

His pace down the flank, ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations, and precise delivery into the box have made him one of Sporting’s most dangerous wide outlets.

Sporting, however, are not in a rush to sell. The club have made it clear that they would prefer to keep Araújo for at least another season, especially given his importance to their tactical structure.

His contract runs until 2029, and it includes a substantial €80 million release clause, designed to protect the club’s position during negotiations.

That said, Sporting’s transfer model has historically involved selling players at the right time for significant profit. Reports from Portuguese media suggest that offers in the region of €40–50 million could tempt the club into serious discussions, particularly if multiple clubs enter the bidding process.

Chelsea and Man United are showing interest

Interest from the Premier League appears to be strongest. Man United have tracked Araújo for several months, viewing him as a potential solution to recurring issues at left-back.

Injuries and inconsistency in that position have forced United to explore versatile alternatives, and Araújo’s ability to contribute both defensively and offensively makes him an appealing option.

Chelsea are also believed to admire the Uruguayan, seeing him as a flexible addition who could compete with, or provide cover for, existing options on the left side.

Among Sporting supporters, Araújo has earned a reputation as a tireless performer, often described in Portuguese media as a “flying wing” due to his relentless energy.

Yet there is also an understanding that a major offer could be difficult to refuse, particularly if it aligns with the club’s financial strategy.
