Sources: Mateta exit to trigger last-minute Palace move for PL striker

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s potential exit from Crystal Palace will trigger a late advancement for Jorgen Strand Larsen, sources have told Football Insider.

The Wolves striker is firmly on the radar of the Eagles, who are keen to add a new striker regardless of Mateta’s fate, and their need for a fresh option at the top of the pitch will only increase if he is sold.

Finances are likely to dictate whether Crystal Palace are able to launch a bid for Strand Larsen, but with Nottingham Forest submitting a £35million offer for Mateta on Monday, the door may be opened towards the Norwegian.

Sources say that the saga surrounding the 25-year-old is likely to drag on into the very final stages of the window, with Wolves still keen to try and sell him to the highest bidder, amid additional interest from Leeds.

How likely is Jean-Philippe Mateta’s departure?

Football Insider recently revealed that Crystal Palace are trying everything to keep Mateta, despite the frontman indicating that he wants to leave the club before the end of the window.

The South London outfit are still adamant that they want their £40m asking price to be met in full, despite the initial offer from Nottingham Forest coming close to testing those boundaries.

Aston Villa and Juventus have also been heavily linked with a move for the Frenchman, meaning that there is no shortage of potential suitors who could be willing to meet the valuation from Steve Parish and Co.

The transfer fee looks set to be the only potential stumbling block behind Mateta’s possible exit from Selhurst Park, with the player himself having already decided that he wants to find a new challenge in the second half of the season.

That looks set to push Crystal Palace towards a move for Strand Larsen, but that will likely depend on whether deals elsewhere can be concluded in time.

Crystal Palace open new manager negotiations

Former Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness recently told Football Insider that Crystal Palace are likely to have started negotiations with potential candidates to take over from Oliver Glasner at the end of the season.

The Austrian recently confirmed his intention to walk away from Selhurst Park upon the expiry of his contract in the summer, amid suggestions that he could even be sacked before then due to the team’s poor run of form.

Wyness expects that the club hierarchy will already be in discussions with a number of potential candidates who could step into Glasner’s role in the coming months, which will only serve to add another dimension to their late January transfer plans.

Palace will be desperate to ensure they don’t leave themselves short up front for the remainder of the campaign, but they will also be keen to avoid buying a player who their next appointment ultimately may not want.
