Sources: Rangers eye deal for new midfielder, CL football to spark summer overhaul

Rangers want to add a new midfielder to their squad as part of their transfer preparations ahead of next season, sources have told Football Insider.

A busy summer is expected at Ibrox, with several ins and outs expected regardless of how the final stages of their push for the Scottish Premiership title unfold in the coming weeks.

Qualification for Champions League football for 2026-27 would result in an overhaul of the playing squad in the coming months, and sources say that a new centre-midfielder will be sourced.

Danny Rohl can currently call upon the likes of Nicolas Raskin, Tochi Chukwuani, Mohamed Diomande and Connor Barron in the middle of the park, but it is understood that further depth is thought to be needed in that area.

Rangers’ transfer ambitions are set to see them try to strengthen in all departments, in order to fuel their desire to become dominant in Scotland once again.

Midfield pursuit to cover Nicolas Raskin exit concerns

Rohl’s team selection has been fairly settled in recent weeks, with the pairing of Raskin and Chukwuani starting together in each of Rangers’ last eight league games.

The duo have impressed with their performances at the base of the midfield as the Gers have begun to hone in on the league title, but the boss is clear that more options will be needed next term.

Barron and Diomande are both viewed as capable understudies to the starting pair at Ibrox, but Rohl is keen to add another player to bolster the ranks ahead of 2025-26.

Football Insider revealed last week that Rangers are bracing to receive offers for Raskin once again this summer, with links to both the Premier League and top European leagues emerging within the last 12 months.

The Gers are aware that even Champions League qualification may not protect them from some of the interest that is building, and they are keen to try and cover themselves from a potential exit for the Belgian.

As a result, a new midfielder has been added to their shopping list ahead of the window, and a new signing is set to be made in that area regardless of how Raskin’s future plays out.

Nedim Bajrami to spark start of Rangers summer exodus

Football Insider revealed on Monday that Rangers will sell Nedim Bajrami this summer, after the winger has fallen to the fringes of Rohl’s squad this term.

The German does not expect the wideman to be part of his plans for 2026-27, and as a result, he and the club hierarchy have decided that the time is right to try and cash in on him in order to fund new additions elsewhere.

Bajrami’s exit is set to form part of an exodus of some of the squad players at Ibrox ahead of next season, with the Albanian having already been identified as one of the main candidates to be “sacrificed” to raise funds.

Rangers are clear that they need to strengthen their squad in all departments if they qualify for the Champions League, such is the level of talent needed just to compete at the top level of European club football.
