Sources: Russell Martin's stance on Leicester City revealed

Russell Martin is a candidate who “ticks a lot of boxes” for Leicester City in their search for a new manager, sources have told Football Insider.

The 40-year-old is interested in taking on the vacant role at the King Power Stadium, given that he has been out of work since he was dismissed by Rangers back in October.

Leicester are looking for somebody who can come in and provide an immediate lift to their fortunes, and Martin’s promotion-winning experience in the Championship is understood to make him an attractive option.

The former Southampton boss is ready and available to agree to take on a new job, and he could now be about to step into the role vacated by Marti Cifuentes.

Cifuentes was sacked by Leicester on Sunday in the aftermath of his side’s home defeat to Oxford United, a result that has left them 14th in the second tier.

Russell Martin has retained a strong reputation despite Rangers failings

Football Insider revealed back in December that Martin was on the radar of several Championship clubs who were potentially looking to change managers midway through the season.

Links with the jobs at the likes of Southampton, Norwich and West Brom have all been and gone, and it is now Leicester that are being hotly tipped to appoint him.

Martin’s reputation within footballing circles remains strong despite his ill-fated Ibrox stint, and his work with Southampton is viewed as one of his big plus points, even though it ended in a sour manner.

The former centre-back is keen to get back into the dugout to begin to right the wrongs of his time north of the border, and the Championship could provide him with the perfect grounding to do so.

The congestion in the middle of the second tier means that the Foxes are still just six points off the play-off positions, and Martin could now be backed to achieve the same Wembley feat that he managed with the Saints previously.

Leicester could lose Abdul Fatawu in last-minute move

Football Insider recently revealed that Leicester are facing interest in Abdul Fatawu from Sunderland, as the Premier League returnees look to bolster their wide options in the final stages of the window.

Bournemouth have also shown an interest in signing the 21-year-old before the upcoming 2 February transfer deadline, as they aim to try and find a capable replacement for Antoine Semenyo.

Fatawu has been influential for the East Midlands outfit this term, as he has started all 29 of his team’s league games so far, and has six goals and seven assists to his name.

Losing the wideman would be a major blow for whoever steps into Cifuentes’ shoes, but a last-minute move could yet be on the cards with Premier League clubs sniffing around his services.
