Sources: Sunderland eye big summer of deals as Le Bris sack decision now imminent

Sunderland are set to have a significant amount of money available to spend once again this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Black Cats have ambitions of becoming a “force” in the Premier League, and they are set to have plenty of funds available this summer to help them build on the progress that they have made this season.

Owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is keen to help push the club towards European football next term, and sources say that he has already committed to another big spend after last year’s exploits following promotion.

The Wearsiders added 14 new faces to their group ahead of their return to the Premier League, and another busy summer is expected at the Stadium of Light this time around.

However, it remains to be seen who the improvements in the squad will be for, with Regis Le Bris’ position as manager now under scrutiny after a difficult run of form.

Sunderland just weeks away from Regis Le Bris ‘review’

Sunderland have enjoyed a positive season on the face of things, as they have never truly been in danger of falling straight back into the Championship.

Le Bris’ men have slowly slipped away from the race to secure European football in recent weeks, but they are still comfortably clear of the relegation battle, and are on course to finish above big-spending Newcastle.

However, that hasn’t been enough to protect the boss from speculation surrounding his future at the helm, with recent reports suggesting that he is under growing pressure in the North East.

Football Insider revealed on Monday that Sunderland are set to “review” Le Bris’ position in charge of the team at the end of the season, meaning they are now just a few weeks away from settling his future.

The Frenchman is understood to have achieved their goals for the season “with ease,” but the club hierarchy’s desire for quick progress has cast doubt over him of late.

The Black Cats end their campaign with a home game against Chelsea on 24 May, and a final decision as to whether Le Bris will be sacked is sure to follow swiftly after.

Ex-Sunderland employee can’t rule out ‘crazy’ Le Bris decision

Former Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider earlier this week that the possibility of Le Bris losing his job at the end of the campaign “can’t be ruled out.”

The former recruitment boss suggested that he feels it would be a “crazy” decision for the 50-year-old to be shown the door after establishing his team back in the Premier League this term.

However, Brown also acknowledged that he “wouldn’t be surprised” if the manager were to be sacked, as owners can often make seismic decisions at the most unpredictable of moments.

As a result, he is adamant that Le Bris’ departure cannot be ruled out, despite how extreme it may seem from the outside.

The Black Cats have defied expectations to put themselves in a position to finish well clear of the relegation zone, but that may not be enough in the eyes of those at the top of the club.
