Stefan Borson: Raheem Sterling could be ‘great signing’ for his new club

Raheem Sterling is on the lookout for a new club after his Chelsea exit has been confirmed.

There was speculation Sterling could stay at Chelsea after holding talks with Liam Rosenior, but a decision was taken on Wednesday (28 January) to part ways.

Sterling responded instantly to the news, posting on social media “All eyes on the future. God is great”.

The 31-year-old is believed to have opened talks with several clubs about his next move, having spent the past three-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge.

It is understood Napoli have made contact with Sterling’s representatives, but it’s unclear whether he is willing to leave England.

Why Raheem Sterling can play for ‘any salary’ after Chelsea termination

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Sterling now has the flexibility to play for whatever salary he wants after agreeing a termination with Chelsea

The winger, who spent last season on loan at Arsenal, earned around £325,000 a week during his time at Stamford Bridge, where his contract was due to run until June 2027.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “It’s great in some ways for Sterling. It certainly secures his financial future, as if that was ever in doubt.

“He’s got to find a club now, but it gives him a lot of flexibility because effectively he can play for any level of salary that he wants, which means that it opens up more opportunities both here and abroad if he wants to go.

“It certainly makes the negotiation easier. He’s already got most of the money.”

Sterling joined Chelsea for £47.5m from Man City in the summer of 2022 following seven successful years at the Etihad Stadium.

How Sterling deal could benefit his next club

Borson insisted Sterling could be a “great signing” for any interested parties if he can recapture his previous form.

“I think it’d be a surprise if nobody comes in for him,” said Borson.

“But it’s hard to get back to top level if you’ve not played properly for quite a long time now. He barely played for Arsenal while he was on loan, so he’s barely played really at a high level for almost two years maybe.

“But he’s only 31. I think if he hit the ground running somewhere, he could be a great signing. But it’s about what he wants to do and probably about his hunger levels.”

West Ham and Fulham have been linked with Sterling in recent weeks, potentially presenting him with an opportunity to remain in London.
