Stefan Borson suggests why Liverpool agreeing Jarell Quansah deal would be ‘very surprising’

Liverpool are unlikely to re-sign Jarell Quansah from Bayer Leverkusen despite their reported interest.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider he would be “very surprised” if the England international returned to Anfield.

Sky Sports Germany’s Patrick Berger reported on 3 March Liverpool are considering re-signing Quansah after agreeing a £69million buy-back clause when he joined Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

The Bundesliga side paid around £35m to sign the 23-year-old, who came through the ranks at Anfield.

Liverpool have been linked with several defenders in recent months following their defensive issues this season.

Why Jarell Quansah returning to Liverpool is ‘hard to believe’

Liverpool’s transfer strategy has been questioned following the latest links to Quansah.

Arne Slot’s side spent heavily on bringing in several new signings to Anfield last summer, but they have struggled to find consistency this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed the prospect of Liverpool re-signing Quansah from Bayer Leverkusen following the reports around his buy-back clause.

“Well, they’re just meant to be there just to give you an option,” said Borson.

“I think the surprising thing would be if they did that deal. I find it very hard to believe that you would effectively pay the best part of €45m (£39m) to have loaned a player to another club for a year.

“I mean, that’s what it would in essence be, so I think it must be unlikely that they’re buying him back.”

Why Liverpool would be making ‘very strange’ move re-signing Quansah

Borson insisted it would be “very strange” for Liverpool to sign Quansah after deciding not to pursue a deal for Marc Guehi, who joined Man City from Crystal Palace in January.

“I think it has been denied by a couple of sources, so I’m not totally convinced that it’s a real report,” said Borson.

“Although, if he is playing fantastically well and of course we will see him in action against Arsenal in the Champions League, so he’s got an opportunity to put himself in the spotlight in those two games.

“I’d be very surprised if they do that deal, put it that way. I mean, especially that they passed on Guehi for whatever reason.

“I think to then go and do that deal would be very strange.”

Quansah has started in 30 of his 34 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen this season, where he’s registered four goals.
