Super Eagles-linked Okoli out for season as Leicester face relegation battle

Leicester City have been dealt a serious setback with the news that defender Caleb Okoli will miss the rest of the season through injury, Soccernet.ng reports.

The centre-back suffered a hamstring problem in training, and manager Gary Rowett has confirmed there is not enough time left in the campaign for him to return. With just a few games remaining, Okoli’s absence comes at a difficult moment for the club.

Leicester are already struggling near the bottom of the EFL Championship table, and losing one of their most reliable defenders only adds to their problems. To make matters worse, fellow centre-back Ben Nelson is also out for the rest of the season with a thigh injury.

Okoli’s absence was first noticed when he was missing from the squad for the defeat against Swansea City. It came as a surprise because he had been a regular starter under Rowett. In his place, Jannik Vestergaard stepped into the defence, while Jamaal Lascelles continued alongside him.

The injuries have forced Leicester to reshuffle their defence at a time when consistency is badly needed. With survival still on the line, every game matters, and losing two defenders at once could prove costly.

Caleb Okoli’s Nigeria connection

Before his injury, Okoli had been one of Leicester’s most dependable players this season. Strong in the air and calm on the ball, he quickly became a key figure in defence.

He had started every match since Rowett took charge, showing how important he had become to the team. Over the course of the campaign, he made nearly 30 league appearances, contributing not just defensively but also with a goal and an assist.

There were also moments that showed his bravery and commitment. Earlier in the season, he played on despite suffering a head injury in a tough match, earning praise for his determination. Performances like that helped him win the trust of both his manager and the fans.

Away from club football, Okoli remains a player of strong interest to Nigeria. Although he has represented Italy at youth level and received a senior call-up, he has not yet played a competitive match for them. This means he is still eligible to represent Nigeria's Super Eagles.

The Nigerian football authorities have been monitoring his progress for some time. With his physical style and reading of the game, many believe he could strengthen the Super Eagles’ defence in the future.

Okoli has previously said Italy is his first choice, but he has also kept the door open to Nigeria if opportunities at senior level do not come. For now, however, his focus will be on recovery.
