Manchester United have been handed a significant injury blow with Patrick Dorgu expected to be sidelined for up to 10 weeks.

The Denmark international scored a sensational goal in United’s 3-2 win over Arsenal on Sunday, finding the top corner with an excellent effort on the half volley from outside the box.

But with 10 minutes of the match remaining, the 21-year-old pulled up while chasing a long ball over the top. Unable to continue, he was replaced by Benjamin Sesko.

Michael Carrick was hopeful the issue was cramp, telling reporters after the game: ‘He obviously came off with, hopefully, a little bit of cramp, hopefully, it’s nothing worse.

‘At this stage, it’s hard to tell, so we’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully it’s not too bad.’

But subsequent scans have revealed it to be a hamstring injury.

While further assessments are still being carried out, The Athletic report he is facing a significant period out.

The games Patrick Dorgu is set to miss

Fulham (H), Sunday 1 February
Tottenham (H), Saturday 7 February
West Ham (A), Tuesday 10 February
Everton (A), Monday 23 February
Crystal Palace (H), Sunday 1 March
Newcastle United (A), Wednesday 4 March
Aston Villa (H), Saturday 14 March
Bournemouth (A), Friday 20 March

That 10-week timeline would see Dorgu miss the next eight games, ruling him out until after the March international break.

While that timeline is not certain at this stage, it would leave him in line to return for United’s home game against Leeds United on 11 April.

Dorgu signed for United in January last year and was used almost exclusively at left wing-back under Ruben Amorim.

He showed a glimpse of his potential in a more advanced role under the Portuguese coach in December, scoring his first goal for the club in the 1-0 win over Newcastle United having been deployed on the right of United’s attack.

He also provided an assist against Burnley while playing further up the pitch during Darren Fletcher’s brief spell in charge.

In Carrick’s two games in charge, Dorgu has been reborn playing on the left of an attacking three, breaking into the box to score in the derby against Manchester City before Sunday’s sublime strike in north London.

United return to action against Fulham on Sunday. Matheus Cunha has started on the bench in each of Carrick’s two games only to make a significant contribution after being bought on and will likely be in line to start against the Cottagers.
