Thomas Tuchel has handed England recalls to Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo for the last international break before the World Cup.

Maguire has not been seen in an England shirt since November 2024 under Lee Carsley, having previously missed out on the Euro 2024 squad due to injury concerns.

Kobbie Mainoo, meanwhile, who started in the Euros final against Spain, fell desperately down the national team pecking order after struggling for regular minutes under ex-United boss Ruben Amorim.

But the pair have now been brought back into the fold as a reward for their fine recent form under new Red Devils interim head coach Michael Carrick.

There is, however, no place in the squad for United left-back Luke Shaw, who was pushing for a recall, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall instead receiving his first call-up under Tuchel.

The German has named an expanded 35-man squad, the final one before he names his 26-man selection for this summer’s World Cup in north America.

But despite that, and the injury to Reece James, there is still no call-up for Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Ollie Watkins is also a surprise omission, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke preferred as options in attack to deputise behind Harry Kane.

Elsewhere, there is a first senior call-up for Everton midfielder James Garner and Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele, despite the veterean shotstopper having yet to make a league appearance this season.

Along with Alexander-Arnold and Shaw, there is no room in the squad for full-back Myles Lewis-Skelly, who scored the first goal of Tuchel’s England tenure but has struggled for minutes this season at Arsenal.

Given the enlarged nature of the squad, Tuchel said this international break, featuring friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, will be ‘divided into basically two camps’.

‘We bring players in that we haven’t seen who haven’t played so much to open up the picture, and the competition for plane tickets to the US,’ the German confirmed.

‘Then from Friday and Saturday, a group of players will come into camp – ten or eleven players who get a rest before and we will then go with a new group and mix of players into the match against Japan.’
