Tom English says Rangers are now sharks under Danny Rohl after recent 'chaos and humiliation'

Rangers have gone from no-hopers to Scottish Premiership title contenders in a matter of months.

Rangers closed to within four points of league leaders Hearts with a 3-0 win over Dundee on Sunday at Ibrox.

Danny Rohl’s Rangers side leapfrogged fierce rivals Celtic into second after their draw with Hearts at the weekend, with the Gers now very much in a title race.

But rewind back to October, and the outlook was far bleaker. Rangers had just sacked summer appointee Russell Martin, with the Glasgow outfit languishing in eighth.

Martin had to be escorted out of Falkirk’s stadium after a 1-1 draw, as Rangers fans tried to stop their own team bus from leaving. Now, they are dreaming over silverware again.

Rangers fly under radar amid Celtic and Hearts fireworks

While Rangers secured a comfortable win over Dundee, albeit with two stoppage-time goals, Tynecastle Park hosted a dramatic 2-2 draw with Hearts and 10-man Celtic.

Derek McInnes’ side had 54.5 per cent possession, 16 shots to Celtic’s nine, and an Expected Goals tally of 1.7 vs 1.2.

Yet they twice went behind, and had it not been for Auston Trusty’s late red card, Hearts may have lost this game. The result may have been the perfect one for Rohl’s men, though.

The contrast in the two matches led BBC Sport writer Tom English to claim Rangers are the ‘circling shark’ in this title race.

He wrote, “Their [Hearts] gap over Celtic remains at six but only four over Rangers, the shark circling the waters at the top, their teeth restored under Danny Rohl. Rangers have come from chaos, humiliation and fury and have moved into serious contention.

It seems completely incongruous a club the size of Rangers, its life spent under a gigantic microscope, could possibly move quietly into contention, but that’s the reality.”

Hearts are this season’s surprise package, with The Jambos losing just two league games all campaign. But Rangers have won six games on the spin and are the team to beat right now.

Who will Rangers sign to boost their title bid?

With the transfer window shutting in the next week, the Ibrox side need to get their dealings just right if they are to win their first league title since 2021.

Rangers have their sights set on Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil as the Mackems academy star struggles for game time this season.

Rangers have also submitted a £2.6million bid for Hansa Rostock striker Ryan Naderi, with the forward said to be keen on an Ibrox transfer.

Conversely, Findlay Curtis is also expected to join Kilmarnock on loan and Danilo could depart before the winter window slams shut.

With transfer deals needing to be wrapped up before the end of 2 February, Rangers are running out of time to strengthen their squad as they aim to complete a remarkable turnaround.
