Tottenham facing Mauricio Pochettino blow as source reveals update

Tottenham Hotspur are set for competition in their hopes of appointing former manager Mauricio Pochettino in the summer.

The Lilywhites are due to hire a new permanent manager to replace Thomas Frank at the end of the season, with Igor Tudor currently serving as an interim manager.

Pochettino has emerged among the main contenders, with the current United States manager having taken charge of Tottenham between 2014 and 2019.

But the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United are also set to search for a new figurehead this summer, and competition could be fierce.

Tottenham’s next manager could well contend with a season in the Championship, should Tudor not be able to save his side from what looks to be impending doom.

Real Madrid add Mauricio Pochettino to shortlist

Pochettino was the last Tottenham manager to produce anything like a consistent challenge for the Premier League title.

The Argentine’s side came close in the 2015-16 season, and even closer in the following season, producing their highest-ever tally of 86 points.

A stunning campaign in the 2018-19 season saw Tottenham enter their first-ever Champions League final in Pochettino’s final season, and the defeat to Liverpool can probably be marked as a turning point.

The former Southampton boss was sacked five months later, and the Lilywhites have been on a downward spiral ever since.

Football Insider exclusively revealed last month that Pochettino is keen to return to Tottenham, and a reunion could be on the cards.

However, according to ESPN, Real Madrid have added the 54-year-old to their shortlist ahead of the summer.

The Spanish giants sacked Xabi Alonso in January, and are unlikely to extend Alvaro Arbeloa’s time in charge past the end of the season.

Pochettino has already given his Tottenham answer

Pochettino seemed to embody Tottenham during his time at the club in a way that the club have not been able to replicate since.

Manager after manager has walked through the doors at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since 2019, but the Argentine has still not been replaced.

Perhaps it will be the return of the man himself that puts an end to that run.

“Look, when I left the club I always remember one interview I said I would like one day to come back to Tottenham and that is of course,” he told Sky Sports in 2025.

“I am in the USA, I am not going to no, I’m not going to talk about that, but what I said then still after six years or five years, I still feel in my heart that, yes, I would like one day to come back. We see the timing, like Daniel [Levy] said.”
