Tottenham: Guglielmo Vicario set for summer exit as Roberto De Zerbi revamp begins early

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is expected to leave this summer.

This comes via Fabrizio Romano, who outlines that conversations between Inter Milan and the Spurs shot stopper have been positive ahead of the transfer window.

It is mentioned that the Italian is focused on helping Spurs get out of their rut before a return to Serie A.

The 29-year-old joined from Empoli in 2023 and has had a far-from-ideal stint in North London, with Spurs fighting at the wrong end of the Premier League for two of his three years in England.

After enduring a difficult season, Vicario is expected to leave as the Roberto De Zerbi revamp begins at Tottenham.

Guglielmo Vicario has endured a difficult season for Tottenham

Spurs are understood to value the goalkeeper up to £17.5million, which would be around the figure that they paid for him in 2023, but nowhere near his peak value of £30m from 2024.

With Italian giants Inter said to be the frontrunners to secure his signature, his time with the Lilywhites could be set to come to an end after a rather disastrous campaign.

Throughout the season, Vicario has received criticism for his haphazard distribution, backed up by his 67 per cent pass completion rate – something that has not been covered up by his shot-stopping ability either, with minus-5.22 goals prevented in the Premier League this term.

While no member of the Spurs squad can escape the criticism this season, the Italian goalkeeper has played a huge part in the calamitous year, with his lack of control of his box further exacerbating the defensive issues that have continued to plague the Lilywhites.

And with the style of play set to be imposed by De Zerbi in mind, an exit may be the best move for all parties.

Roberto De Zerbi’s style of play will not suit Guglielmo Vicario

When it comes to the Italian’s style, players comfortable in possession are imperative, even when it comes to the man in between the sticks.

In build-up, a big characteristic of a De Zerbi team is the backline and goalkeeper baiting the opposition into a press.

During his time with Brighton, the 46-year-old was quick to make a big call during the early days of his tenure, dropping Robert Sanchez for Jason Steele, simply due to the added comfort on the ball – backed up again the following summer as he moved for Bart Verbruggen.

At 29, Vicario is unlikely to hit any new heights at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and the summer may be the best time to cash in, with his lack of ability on the ball meaning that he is simply never going to be the long-term number one under De Zerbi.

Should Tottenham secure their survival under their new boss, they will be looking for a complete reset over the summer months.

Building a side capable of performing to his standards, the revamp under the Italian is set to commence over the summer, and unfortunately, that may mean that a departure for his compatriot Vicario, is on the cards.
