Tottenham have new transfer priority after resurgence of star Postecoglou called a ‘leader’

Tottenham need to crack on with their January business despite the uncertainty over Thomas Frank’s future.

The Lewis family splashed £35million to sign Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, with the midfielder followed by left-back Souza at N17 for £13million.

Spurs have been linked with Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson in recent days, and could be about to strengthen their defensive options further.

Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Burnley on Saturday was damaging for Frank‘s future at the Lilywhites, but the game gave great insight into the area that needs to be improved next.

Yves Bissouma, in particular, gave Johan Lange a lot to think about.

Yves Bissouma has shifted Tottenham’s transfer focus

Bissouma has had his off-field issues, where many thought he would never play in a Spurs shirt again, after he was caught inhaling laughing gas.

The midfielder has also had to recover from a long-term injury, but he’s bounced back fantastically.

Bissouma has now featured in Tottenham’s last two Premier League games and seems to be forming a great partnership with Gallagher.

Bissouma proved that Tottenham’s midfield doesn’t need much tweaking in the remaining time left of the window, and the overall performance showed it’s the attack where the Lilywhites need to add.

Tottenham’s main source of attack is currently from defenders off set-pieces, and that’s not good enough.

Mohammed Kudus’ injury has only added to the issues in the final third, and Lange simply needs to shift that focus immediately.

Ange Postecoglou has shown faith in Bissouma

Bissouma hasn’t had a chance to impress Frank up until now, but he may have changed his own fortunes with displays against West Ham and Burnley.

While speaking on talkSPORT in 2023, Ange Postecoglou detailed his first impressions of Bissouma when he took charge of Tottenham.

Postecoglou said: “I kind of grabbed him [Bissouma] and said to him that the way he was training at the time, the first three or four sessions we mainly had young guys and I said, ‘you can be a leader in this group’.

“I already knew about his ability, but the way he was training, I could see he got a lift from that.”

Tottenham have been linked with Savinho and Omar Marmoush in recent weeks, with a loan move for the former more likely as Kudus’ potential stop-gap replacement.

A right-winger is essential for the Lilywhites this month, and Savinho should be the target, considering the solidity in the middle of the park.
