Tottenham: Rob Earnshaw is right, Spurs aren’t a top six club anymore

Tottenham Hotspur are more of a relegation team than a top-six Premier League club, says ex-Wales international Rob Earnshaw.

Tottenham’s Premier League status is teetering on the edge of a knife, with Igor Tudor’s side sitting one point and one place above the relegation zone.

In the space of less than a year, Tottenham are on their third manager, after parting company with Ange Postecoglou, and then replacing the sacked Thomas Frank with Tudor until the end of the season.

And they are in this mess despite having the tag of defending Europa League champions. Tottenham are being linked with big managerial names such as Mauricio Pochettino and Roberto De Zerbi.

But as former Premier League striker Earnshaw points out, Tottenham’s league results in the last two years make a mockery of their supposed big six status and coaches of that calibre won’t go near them.

Tottenham suitors saying ‘no thanks’ to club

Tottenham were famously part of the six English sides who tried to break away and join the European Super League in 2021. That failed, and Spurs were left with egg on their face.

While they didn’t have the trophies to back up that claim, they had the stadium, the training ground, and the league position to just about merit that tag.

But in the last two seasons, their league form has been dire.

Gareth Bale pointed out that Tottenham need to go bigger with their transfer fees, rather than signing young, up-and-coming talents.

Moreover, Spurs are unable to attract the top players because they refuse to budge on their wage structure, which languishes behind Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, and now Aston Villa.

And as Earnshaw alludes to, many managers won’t want anything to do with Tottenham due to their current predicament, with Tudor on the verge of the sack.

He said on Sky Sports: “The biggest worry for Tottenham is they can’t actually attract who they want and who they think would keep them up. We can say Tottenham are one of the big six and all of these things.

“Unfortunately, they’re not, and [they’ve been] nowhere near that for the last two years. Tottenham are a relegation team. And a lot of people are going to be looking at that job and saying, ‘Why did Thomas Frank struggle? Why is Igor Tudor struggling?’

“Because he’s done it at Juventus and Marseille and all these big teams. But then the struggle is there. I don’t want that job. There’s going to, so there’s going to be managers out there that say, ‘No, thanks, I don’t want it’.”

Where will Tottenham’s wins come from?

This year has proven to be a rotten one for Tottenham. They haven’t won in the Premier League since 28 December and have lost some very winnable matches since then.

They lost to an out-of-form West Ham in January, failed to put away relegation-threatened Burnley, lost at home to Newcastle United, who had a wretched away record, and then were trounced by lowly Forest.

That begs the question, which of their remaining seven fixtures are they likely to win?

On the face of it, a victory away at basement side Wolves in late April could be one such game, and their home clash with fellow strugglers Leeds United may be another.

But outside of that, this Spurs team don’t look capable of beating anyone right now, let alone the Europe-chasing sides they face in the coming weeks.
