Transfer Insider drops Arsenal warning for summer window - 'Big spending has got to stop'

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta must work with the squad at his disposal and not make any big money signings this summer.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Arsenal, and rivals Chelsea, both need to stop spending big in the transfer market.

The Gunners have already been warned that they need to sell a star player this summer, with the likes of Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and Myles Lewis-Skelly among those potentially leaving Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal spent around £250million last summer in a bid to end their 22-year wait for a Premier League title, with no major money earned from sales.

An increasing wage bill at Arsenal has also put pressure on the Gunners to make a sale this summer, and win a major trophy this season in order to balance the books.

Arsenal handed warning ahead of summer transfer window

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes “big spending” needs to stop at Arsenal.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the club would face a “challenge” signing any big players this summer.

Commercial Revenue£263.2m

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think it would be a bit of a challenge now for Arsenal, and Chelsea, to both start looking to bring in really big money players.

“Chelsea, as we know, have been focusing on the younger end of the market. Arsenal have built a squad already. And so at some stage, the big spending has got to stop.

“They’ve got to work on what they’ve got and seeing what they’ve invested in can actually work for them. And they’ve got to take a season off some big spending.”

Arsenal face difficulty agreeing Martin Odegaard sale

Whilst the north London club may be looking to agree sales this summer, former Man City financial advisor Stefan Borson told Football Insider that Arsenal may struggle to offload Martin Odegaard.

Odegaard, whose season has been disrupted by injuries, would find leaving north London difficult if the Gunners asked in excess of £80m for their captain.

The 27-year-old joined Arsenal from Real Madrid for £34m, and has developed into a key figure in Arteta’s side over the past five years.
