Don Robertson has been appointed referee ahead of Rangers’ Scottish Cup quarter-final clash with Celtic on Sunday.

The two sides are set to play out the second Old Firm derby in a week, after a pulsating 2-2 league draw at Ibrox on 1 March.

Robertson has taken charge of five Rangers matches this season, with August’s 0-0 Old Firm draw at Ibrox part of this collection.

His last two in the middle of a Rangers clash ended with wins against Hibs and Hearts.

Though he does remain controversial for previous decisions against Rangers, so Danny Rohl certainly will not be happy.

Don Robertson has had previous criticism from Rangers

Robertson’s appointment is unlikely to pass without scrutiny, given some of the flashpoints he has been involved with when overseeing Rangers across recent years.

One of the most high-profile moments came against Celtic in September 2023, when a Kemar Roofe goal was ruled out following VAR intervention.

The decision sparked fury, with former striker Ally McCoist branding the call “appalling” at the time, with the debate carrying on regarding whether the incident truly met the ‘clear and obvious’ threshold.

More recently, in April 2025, former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett criticised Robertson for failing to award Rangers a free-kick for an alleged obstruction on Cyriel Dessers during a clash with Hibernian.

Among the fanbase, questions also remain in the air regarding what some feel can be a haphazard approach to stopping the flow of matches and awarding yellow cards.

Rangers welcome Celtic to Ibrox once again on Sunday, as the sides look to secure a place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals.

Throwback derby could define the season for Rangers

Ahead of Sunday’s clash at Ibrox, Celtic are preparing to take the full allocation of away supporters for the first time in almost a decade.

Visiting allocations were cut following the March 2018 edition of the derby, with Rangers falling to a 3-2 defeat despite leading twice thanks to goals from Josh Windass and James Tavernier.

In the recent league outings, around 2000-2500 tickets have been allocated after what was a near two-year period with no travelling contingent at all.

A compromise has been reached, with Rangers under the impression that a similar allocation will be granted for a potential future cup tie at Celtic Park.

To further complicate matters, this weekend will have a significant impact on the season’s outcome.

With Celtic knocked out of the Europa League by VfB Stuttgart, the chance is there for O’Neill’s side to go trophyless for just the third time this century.

After playing out a draw in the league, Rangers have the chance to hammer yet another nail into the coffin after a severely underpar campaign for Celtic.

And with the momentum gained alongside, Rohl’s side would be set up for one final charge at the title, with Hearts sitting six points in front with the split approaching.
