View: Dujon Sterling may already be injured again after new Rangers reveal before Kilmarnock

Dujon Sterling has been short on luck amid an injury-hit season for Rangers.

After the deadline day excitement of Rangers signing striker Ryan Naderi, the Gers are turning their attention to a Scottish Premiership clash with Kilmarnock on Wednesday night.

Naderi could make his Rangers debut in that encounter, with the former Hansa Rostock star eager to hit the ground running at Ibrox.

While that is an exciting prospect for head coach Danny Rohl, the German may be without right-back Sterling once again.

The former Chelsea man has barely featured this term due to injuries and now speculation is mounting that he is out again.

Concern mounts over Rangers defender Dujon Sterling

Over the summer, Sterling, 26, sustained an Achilles tendon injury that required surgery.

The former Coventry City loanee made a telling first-team return in mid-December as he bagged a vital assist in Rangers’ 1-0 home win over Hibernian.

A few games into his comeback, though, Sterling missed a couple of matches with a muscular problem before starting in Rangers’ goalless draw with Hibernian on Sunday.

Now, however, Rangers podcast host Iain Mitchell has shared an email from the club about Sterling being in the FanZone on Wednesday night, before posing the question, “Is he injured again?”

Some fans wondered if Rangers were resting Sterling after just coming back from injury, and others pointed out that the Scottish Cup fifth round clash with Queens Park on Sunday may be a more suitable game for his recovery.

That leaves the likes of James Tavernier or Max Aarons as right-back options ahead of the Kilmarnock match. If he were injured, that would be desperately unlucky for the defender.

However, this may just be a smart move to manage his minutes and ease him back into action, as Sterling has made just seven appearances this season.

Rangers handed Scottish Premiership title opportunity

After winning six games in a row, Rangers had cut Hearts’ gap at the top of the table to just four points, while holding a two-point cushion over bitter rivals Celtic.

That deficit grew to six points at the weekend, but 10-man Hearts’ loss to St. Mirren on Tuesday has presented Rangers and Celtic with an opportunity.

Hearts are this season’s unlikely package, but the question is, how long can they keep this up? Celtic and Rangers have had a monopoly on the league, albeit the Gers haven’t lifted the title since 2021.

But this season presents a great opportunity for Hearts and Rangers to end Celtic’s recent dominance in the Scottish Premiership.

After the Killie and Queen’s Park games, Rangers travel to fourth-placed Motherwell before hosting Hearts in a crunch clash on 15 February.

If results go their way in the coming weeks, Rangers could wipe out Hearts’ advantage if they beat them on home turf. An intriguing final few months of the season lie ahead.

Let’s hope Sterling can play a big part in them.
