James Garner gave a good account of himself away from Everton despite England’s 1-0 defeat against Japan.

The Toffees have several stars looking to make it into their international squads, with some admittedly looking far more likely than others.

Garner is one of them, having earned his first-ever senior England call-up in March, with a start in the draw with Uruguay and coming on as a substitute in the defeat to Japan.

Everton will hope to have several representatives in the England squad this summer, and there remains a good chance that Garner will be one of them.

James Garner shows why England need him at World Cup

Garner is by no means the type of midfielder that can turn a game on its head, but as showcased throughout his time with Everton this season, he plays a crucial role.

His ability to retain possession of the ball and also win it back for his team has been crucial to the Toffees’ success this season, and England will need that this summer.

Despite only playing the latter stages against Japan, Garner showcased those qualities yet again, with a 91 per cent pass accuracy from 22 attempted passes and a 67 per cent cross completion rate.

On top of that, the 25-year-old created two chances for his teammates in the 19 minutes he played, while also winning his only ground duel of the game.

Garner offers something different to what Thomas Tuchel would usually have at his disposal, and he needs to take advantage of it.

What has Thomas Tuchel said about Garner?

His best showing was certainly in the draw with Uruguay, after which Tuchel actually referred to him as their own “mini (Federico) Valverde”, showcasing the level of trust he has in the Everton star.

Tuchel added after his debut: “He’s getting there, and he played very, very good. I was quite sure that he will play good because he has this natural confidence and he’s just very physical. He won a lot of balls.”

Anyone who has watched him at Everton will have already known of those qualities, and for Tuhcel to have already noticed them after one performance can only be a good thing.

Whether it be this summer or not, Garner is a future England regular, though he will be hoping that his chance comes at the upcoming World Cup.
