View: Everton to prioritise contract talks with 'humble' player as transfer deja vu possible

Everton could potentially be faced with another winter transfer where Beto is linked away from the club.

In January 2025, there were talks of the Guinea-Bissau international possibly leaving the club after struggling for game time, but David Moyes came in and revived his career at the Toffees.

In the previous transfer window, the centre-forward was once again linked with an exit after being behind Thierno Barry in the pecking order, but he has managed to work his way into the starting lineup in recent weeks.

Beto’s importance at Hill Dickinson Stadium has become evident, but his current contract at the Blues enters the final year at the end of the season and they may want to protect his value.

The Friedkin Group should sign a new striker for Moyes in the summer, as they lack depth in that area, but that could see speculation about the former Udinese number nine’s exit grow again midway through the upcoming campaign if he isn’t first on the team sheet.

Beto can’t expect sympathy at Everton

Beto seems to come alive toward the latter stages of the season, but he can’t base his entire reputation on it.

Moyes has been crying out for a reliable goalscorer for several months now as Barry and the Guinea-Bissau striker failed to shoulder the Toffees’ attacking burden.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Blues pursue a quality number nine in the summer, which could lead to transfer deja vu around Beto.

While the 28-year-old is considered a hard worker at the Merseyside outfit, he needs to show more to cement his place as the first-choice number nine.

Speaking to the media after Beto’s brace against Chelsea last month, Moyes said, “I think he’s earned it a little bit from his work. I’ve always said, he never complains, he gets his head down. He’s an incredibly humble boy. He’s last off the training ground just about every day, he wants more, he wants people to try and improve him.”

David Moyes to resist Beto transfer offers

Even if Everton sign a new striker for the 2026-27 campaign, Beto shouldn’t be allowed to leave.

The Toffees are competing to qualify for Europe and if they achieve that goal, Moyes will need as much quality as he can get to compete on all fronts.

As things stand, the Blues already lack depth in the number nine position and it wouldn’t make sense to sign someone in that position and then sell the Guinea-Bissau star.

The Scottish manager will surely want a competitive squad for next season and the Merseyside outfit should prioritise contract talks with Beto rather than thinking about letting him go.
