View: Ho must adapt as Tottenham Women suffer fresh injury blow before Man Utd clash

Tottenham Hotspur star Hanna Wijk has suffered a season-ending injury ahead of facing Manchester United in the Women’s Super League.

The defender only joined Tottenham from Hacken in January on a long-term deal but she won’t play for the club again this season.

The 22-year-old was stretchered off during a Sweden Under-23 match earlier this month and now she is set for a spell on the sidelines.

The youngster, who has one senior cap for her country, has played eight times for Tottenham this term but she will be absent from Spurs’ home clash with Man United on Sunday.

Tottenham have a hefty injury list heading into this encounter, but it is not all bad news for Ho’s team as they aim to return to winning ways.

Tottenham without five for Man Utd challenge

On Friday, manager Ho confirmed that Wijk has sustained a medical collateral ligament injury that will end her season.

She joins long-term Tottenham absentees Clare Hunt, Jess Naz, Maite Oroz, and Luana Buhler. This is not ideal as Spurs are trying to end a difficult run of form.

However, Japan international Maika Hamano is back in contention after missing the Chelsea match.

Ho told reporters, “Everyone is fit and healthy. Hanna [Wijk] picked up an injury when she was with [Sweden] Under-23s and that will rule her out for the rest of the season.

“It’s not an ACL, it’s an MCL injury so she will be out for the rest of the season. She will now be looked after by the medical team at the club and we will make sure we do everything we can to get Hanna back.”

Ho is also expecting there to be a bit of “needle and bite” in Tottenham’s clash with Man United.

The last time these two teams met, Tottenham threw away a 3-0 lead as Man United came back to secure a last-gasp draw in mid-December.

Tottenham aiming for WSL history

If Tottenham can secure their first competitive win over Man United on Sunday, that will take them level with their best-ever WSL points total of 32.

They still have two more matches after this one to surpass that goal, with Spurs set to secure fifth place in the division.

Ho has done a superb job at Tottenham so far but this sticky patch of form will have frustrated him no end.

That can all be dispelled if they upset the odds and beat the Red Devils in front of their home fans on Sunday lunchtime, though.
