View: Moyes to live with regret as Everton's starting XI named vs Man City

Everton have named their starting 11 to take on Man City at Hill Dickinson.

Nothing will be decided tonight, but the Toffees are in need of a win to make sure that they can keep their European hopes alive, especially having failed to win any of their last three.

On the flip side, Man City are just as much in need of a win, with them now six points behind Arsenal at the top of the table, albeit with two games in hand.

David Moyes has had a number of big decisions to make when it comes to his starting 11, one of which is in regard to the inclusion of Dwight McNeil.

And while hindsight may side with Moyes, he looks to have made the wrong decision ahead of Everton’s clash with Man City.

Dwight McNeil benched for Everton vs Man City

McNeil looked destined for an exit from Everton in the winter, until a late move to Crystal Palace collapsed at the last hurdle.

Since then, he has been integrated into the starting 11, despite having rarely proven his worth, given the lack of attacking threat posed.

For context, he ranks among the bottom 41.6 per cent of wingers in the Premier League for number of chances created per 90, as well as in the bottom 15.2 per cent for number of dribbles completed.

However, despite the lack of threat and role he has played for Everton going forward, Moyes has constantly got plenty out of him defensively, which has gone unnoticed, and that often allows others around him to flourish.

But on this occasion, Moyes has surprisingly opted to drop him, with Merlin Rohl coming into the team instead, and that could prove to be a big error from the Scotsman given the level fo quality they are set to come up against.

Who else is starting for Everton vs Man City?

Aside from Moyes potentially getting it wrong with dropping McNeil, it’s very much as expected when it comes to the rest of the starting 11.

Beto leads the line, looking to continue his fine form in front of goal, while Iliman Ndiaye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall will be looking to combine to create the chances.

Tim Iroegbunam replaces Idrissa Gueye in midfield, which is perhaps the only other unexpected change.

On paper, it is still a team that is capable of getting something from the game, but performance levels will have to increase signficantly from the last three encounters.
