View: Rangers' £318k spent per midfielder's goal contribution looks increasingly shrewd

Rangers are seeing an increasing return on their investment on Thelo Aasgaard, with his £318,181 cost per goal contribution looking like increasingly good business.

Costing Rangers a cool £3.5m to purchase him from Luton Town in this season’s summer transfer window, Aasgaard has taken a while to warm up in Glasgow.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder soon found himself in a starting role under Russell Martin, but after one too many inconsistent performances, he fell out of favour with Danny Rohl shortly after his appointment.

Hence why it was a major surprise to many Gers supporters to see the Norwegian international named as part of the starting lineup against Aberdeen on 21 March, which was his first start since the 5-1 win over Kilmarnock on 4 February.

But, after grabbing an assist in that game, Aasgaard followed that up with a goal in Rangers’ 4-2 win over Dundee United on Saturday.

Thelo Aasgaard’s Rangers cost per goal contribution explained

Aasgaard did face fan frustration against Dundee United though, as he was briefly the subject of groans of disappointment from the Ibrox faithful after his poor delivery from a first half corner.

However, after getting back on the ball out wide, some lovely footwork saw him skip past a United defender before unleashing a brilliant left-footed effort from the edge of the box that was spilled to Ryan Naderi for him to turn home.

Aasgaard wasn’t awarded the assist for that one, but did get himself on the box score with a close-ranged finish on 52 minutes, which moved Rangers into a 3-1 lead.

He is so clearly a player with bags of ability and potential, and if it all comes together for him at Ibrox, Gers will have one of the top players in the division on their hands.

Given his recent struggles prior to the last two games, many were beginning to fear the £3.5m spent on him last summer was a considerable financial misfire.

But, with now back-to-back goal contributions in successive games, and a player that is playing with refreshed belief and confidence, Aasgaard is starting to show why the 49ers splashed out on him.

In 42 total appearances for Rangers this season, Aasgaard has scored six goals and provided five assists, taking his total goal contributions tally to 11 so far this term.

When we divide that by his widely reported transfer fee, that works out at a total of £318,181 per goal contribution in 2025-26.

Aasgaard now looking like a Rangers title-winning talent

Arriving at Ibrox with international pedigree and some productive years playing in the EFL across spells with both Wigan Athletic and Luton Town respectively, big things were always expected of Aasgaard in Glasgow.

And, despite his peaks and troughs so far this season, his 42 total appearances actually have him only two more run outs away from equalling his career-high for games played in a single season, which currently stands at 44 with Wigan in 2022-23.

He was the kind of signing made last summer that signalled a clear statement of intent by Rangers to get back to seriously contending, and indeed winning, league titles, and now he’s starting to show that.

So, if this purple patch can extend itself until the end of the season, then the Norwegian may well play a vital role in Rangers lifting their first Premiership trophy since 2021.
