View: Rangers may regret summer transfer exit as midfielder shines abroad

Rangers and Ianis Hagi mutually agreed to move on from one another at the end of the 2024-25 season, and he’s now starring for Alanyaspor in Turkey.

Having initially joined Rangers on loan from Genk in January 2020, Hagi enjoyed mixed success during his time at Ibrox.

The versatile Romanian international fired home eight times and provided 13 assists during his debut 2020-21 season as a permanent Gers player, and it looked as though they’d struck gold with him as a result.

However, Hagi was never able to match those production levels again in Glasgow, with his minutes and impact gradually decreasing as time went on.

So, in May 2025, Rangers confirmed that Hagi would be leaving Ibrox, but Gers may now be regretting that particular transfer decision.

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.

How is Ianis Hagi doing in Turkey for Alanyaspor?

After a couple of months on the free agent market last summer, Hagi eventually found a new club in the form of Turkish Super Lig outfit, Alanyaspor.

Hagi suffered significant injury problems with Rangers, and that no doubt contributed towards the decision to allow him to seek pastures new.

Thankfully then, it will please Rangers fans to hear he’s been largely able to stay fit for Alanyaspor this season, and the Turkish side will be grateful for that too given his performance levels.

He’s made 25 appearances in all competitions for the Antalya-based outfit this term, scoring five goals and providing two assists.

As detailed in the above graphic from Sofascore, the now-27-year-old attacking midfielder has been hugely influential for them this season, with his team currently sitting 10th in the Turkish Super Lig.

In the Turkish league this season, Hagi has been named in the team of the week once, is averaging 1.7 shots per game, has scored two goals from free-kicks and has created five big chances.

He’s also playing 1.5 key passes per game, recording a passing accuracy of 79 per cent, won 57 per cent of his duels and has made zero errors leading to any shots or goals for the opposition respectively.

Hagi may have been better than what Rangers have

Rangers boss Danny Rohl isn’t short for options in attack, but he does perhaps lack some depth in terms of the quality drop-off beyond the likes of Mikey Moore and Yousef Chermiti.

Djeidi Gassama has been poor recently, whilst Ryan Naderi is a raw talent that is still getting up to speed with Scottish football.

Elsewhere, Thelo Aasgaard hasn’t quite had the debut season at Ibrox he would’ve been envisioning, whilst Rangers fans are still waiting for Andreas Skov Olsen to make the impact they expected he would.

Therefore, whilst Hagi may not have been a cemented starter in Rohl’s team, his form in Turkey coupled with numerous forwards struggling for Gers at the moment would at least suggest he could’ve carved out a role near the top of the pecking order.
